BOTF All in one installer (beta testing topic)

Post by thunderchero »

Hi Everyone,

well I took the leap version 1.0.0 has been released.

here is release topic page
viewtopic.php?f=23&t=3509

changes from RC5;
fixed minor ship stat error in UDM
DxWnd folders renamed to allow Command line arguments
updated DxWnd files
added remove_add_joker.patch for QD's patcher folders
added DxWnd help to start menu
added Command line arguments options for icons

RC5 has been released
changes from RC4;
fixed files being installed to wrong locations
jokers patch removed from all mods (trek.exe changes only)
updated DxWnd files (note jokers patch was conflicting with DxWnd)

Note; if RC4 is installed you should uninstall all mods and tools to avoid DxWnd conflicts.

RC4 has been released
changes from RC3;
fixed incorrect files being used by AAM for 800 and 1024 versions when build option was selected.

RC3 has been released
changes from RC2;
tutorial saves restored to vanilla install for 800 and 1024 (1366 has map conflict errors)
The installer will now allow multiple mods to be installed with a single execution.

RC2 has been released
changes from RC1;
corrected script to allow spaces in base install path.

It is time for some open Beta/release candidate testing.

here is link to download section

each installed component/mod averages about 400mb

Versions/components within this installer

list.jpg (109.6 KiB) Viewed 9745 times
Install-able tools
DxWnd (fullscreen and windows) preloaded
Ultimate Editor (version 0.7.2dev5c)
QD's Patcher (with option to select different patch folder) included folders; QD's patch folder, ecm4.0_patches, ucw_patches and udm_patches.

What to expect when running new installer.

When you first execute BOTF_All_in_One_Rc1.exe you will be prompted to select the language to install.
language.jpg
language.jpg (38.64 KiB) Viewed 9745 times
You have 2 options English or German
Note; since most mods were released in English only, When German is selected, the installer will install as much German as possible. Some mods this is very limited. example; with Ultimate Dominion mod, when Dominion or Federation is played it would be still mostly English, while Cardassins, Klingons and Romulans would be only 30% English.
Vanilla, Error correction mod, Balance of power and Planet mod have full German versions.

next is the new license agreement
license1.jpg
license1.jpg (117.87 KiB) Viewed 9745 times
you must accept before continuing.

Next, you will need to select the "Base folder location used by installer"
location.jpg
location.jpg (73.88 KiB) Viewed 9745 times
Default location is the same as the original game used (C:\BOTF)
If you want to change this location you will need to change location each time installer is executed.
Note; each component folder is added automatically by installer. This is only base folder location

Next, you need to select what you want to install on this execution of the installer from the list.
as of RC3 multiple mods can be selected on single execution.
select2.jpg
select2.jpg (96.74 KiB) Viewed 8994 times
If you plan on using DxWnd you need to install the tools on first execution so each mod can adjust install path used by DxWnd.
since tools are first on list, it will install before any mod (as long as it is selected)

When a mod is already installed it must be uninstalled before re-installing or you will get this message.
warn.jpg
warn.jpg (69.81 KiB) Viewed 9745 times
Note; multiple instances of installer can be running at the same time. but if you do this be careful not to execute same component when it is already running.

Next, you can select options for the selected mod being installed.
options.jpg
options.jpg (85.93 KiB) Viewed 9745 times
you can select the resolution to install (original 800 x 600, 1024 x 768 or 1366 x 768)
if mods have larger galaxies you can select to install zoomed in view.
option to add desktop icon.
some mods will also have option to add hob fix for combat evade and retreat CTD.
vanilla also has same special options as latest version. :wink:

Start menu
each installation has a folder added to the start menu for "Documentations" this will have various file such as original readme files and links to support pages.

Installation time trials
I used a stopwatch during testing from time I executed the BOTF_All_in_One_Rc1.exe until I clicked finish on final screen.
Note; installer will check internal files when first executed so may take 5-20 sec before seeing language dialog screen due to file size.

first test windows 7, 8 core 3.50GHz 16 gb memory ssd hard drive desktop

single map version (ECM)
800 version 59 sec
1366 version 1:22

Dual map version (UCW)
800 version 2:08
1366 version 2:49

second test windows 10, dual core 2.0ghz 8gig memory ssd hard drive laptop

single map version (ECM)
800 version 1:39
1366 version 2:15

Dual map version (UCW)
800 version 3:22
1366 version 4:35

Uninstalling
You will be able to uninstall though start menu, add/remove programs and by directly executing the unins000.exe in each normal map install path. (large install path will not have uninstaller, but uninstall when normal unins000.exe is executed)

Details on installer file locations
installed game files
(User defined) default location C:\botf

start menu shortcuts
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Microprose

desktop shortcuts
C:\Users\Public\Desktop

regisrty entries
64 bit systems
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microprose (Written by installer)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\DirectPlay\Applications (Written by installer)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall (written by windows but uses app id from installer)

32 bit systems
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microprose (Written by installer)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectPlay\Applications (Written by installer)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall (written by windows, but uses app id from installer)

Usage of 1920 x 1080 universal patch
This patch has had limited testing, but I have had no issues when applied to 800 x 600 versions. But this patch may get updated before final release.

Known issues
1. when starting new games on edited maps (Galaxies mod, Ultimate mod 5, large map versions and all 1366 x 768) still has random CTD due to galaxy generation. so video should be allowed to run at least 1/2 way.
2. some desktop icon may display white (no proper icon image) this is a windows issue with icon cache. After Reboot icon should display properly.

I hope everyone enjoys,

I guess it is Friday somewhere.... :lol:

Please post all comments here.

if you have a bug to report please list;
1. version/mod with issue
2. Language that was installed
3. all options that was installed with
4. your operating system
5. was DxWnd used

if you are unsure/forgot what options that was installed. you can view registry;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\
and starting at {18C94B21-9C7B-11D0-933A-10307CEA7318}_is1 are the uninstall registry
but you must find correct one for the mod with issues. the entry with;
"Inno Setup: Selected Tasks" will list tasks installed like this "b1366,desktopicon,patch,patch1,patch2,patch3"
this would tell me it was installed with 1366, desktop icon, hob patch, replacement 512 x 512 Model textures, replacement ship Build screen tga images and gui fixes.

But hope to see very few issues

Install path shouldn't have spaces in it. When using the path

D:\Games\Star Trek\BotF

the game crashed upon launching with a trek.exe has stopped working message. No matter which mod or resolution I chose

Using

D:\Games\BotF

works like a charm though. IIRC this problem was discussed back in the days when main multi installer was released. Thought I'd mention it again though as quite some years have passed since then. Other than that I'm having absolutely no issues. Even the shortcut problem with some of them appearing and staying white is gone. Many thanks TC & Flocke! :up:

yes, you should be able to use spaces in path when installing. :shock:

this will be fixed on next release next Friday.
captaindusk wrote:IIRC this problem was discussed back in the days
yes it was, but error was present also in original cd install and only effected multi-player connection.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I can't get the 1366 patch to work -- not for vanilla BOTF nor for any of the mods. Whenever I fire up the game, the sound plays, but all I get is a black screen.

The 1024 patch works just fine, however. :???:

as I expected beta testing is slow, If you have any issues let me know. also many new images were required to be created/resized. if you notice any missing or improper sizes let me know and get them corrected.

Other than the "no spaces allowed in install directory" bug highlighted above, all else are working great for me on the laptop!

Saves a heck of a lot of time downloading all the mods and patches and etc. Now just for all the mods to be updated and completed...hehe :D

Thank you Thunderchero!

Yeah, I honestly haven't noticed anything so far. I'm sure I will eventually, but right now everything looks good.
