please if you could let us know video card model and driver version.

I have always suspected windows 8/10 mouse lag was a driver issue, now since this is second report of same issue on windows 7 it sounds like more problems to come for many older games

Hi thunderchero, my GFX card is an EVGA GTX 760 SC. Nvidia driver version is 364.51. I have had no problem since I downloaded the DXWnd tool last night. Everything is working as it should with the tool (thanks for posting that by the way, I would be devastated if I couldn't play BOTF any more!!)

LoneTower wrote:Greetings all,

I've recently dug my copy of botf out after a nostalgia kick. Really do love this game, though it's been a while.
I am just desperate for help with 2 things: First and foremost the mouse lag, then secondarily the minor race no contact bug (I can put a 2nd post later for this if you want).
My problem is all the fixes I've tried to find either do nothing or make absolutely no sense to me (probably some combination of both in each instance).
Just to confirm, I'm running windows 10 on a 32bit. Prior stuff I've tried include the ECM/ECML download, but they don't even try to start when clicked on. The botf patcher app I found on another site same thing; try to activate and a big fat nothing.

Which brings me to the current issue here - I have downloaded the full screen dxwnd and extracted all the files. But when I launch the app file, I don't get anything that looks like the menu screen posted in the OP. All I get is a small window titled dxwnd that has a list of what appear to be all the mods with green circles filled in on botf, ecm, and ecml. I've tried clicking on any of the options in the menu dropdown, but again none of them have any functionality.

If I had hair, I'd be pulling it out right now. Please, any Obi Wan's out there, help me! And if possible, talk to me like I'm 4 and have no idea what I am doing, cause. . .
Thanks in advance.
Hi LoneTower, firstly all you will get when you launch DxWnd is the little list you have seen. To modify settings as per the screenshot in the OP, you must right click on the version of BOTF you have installed and click Modify on the menu that appears. You can then setup your file paths/resolutions etc. If you have more than one modded installation, you can set different settings for each one. Once you have done this, the little circle next to your version in the list will turn green to let you know that the paths are configured correctly. All you need to do then is right click your version in the list and click run!

Finally, make sure that DxWnd is running with administrator privileges and that you have the vanilla (software) graphics version installed.

Hope this helps.

ghotik is the developer of dxwnd, he deserves all the thanks for his efforts. He is consistently updating dxwnd, last version I updated here was v2.03.45 current released version is v2.03.57, but no noticeable improvements for botf.

here is his page Dxwnd download/support page

Re: DxWnd pre-loaded for BotF (solves most windows 8/10 issues)

Post by thunderchero »

Files have been updated to latest version of DxWnd See first post for links.

notable changes:
setting for fullscreen changed, now pre-loaded settings allow usage of start button to minimize game.
all preloaded setting will read BOTF GUI so no need to edit resolution within Dxwnd.
all pre-loaded settings included -MUDD

Will someone please write a step-by-step walk through on how to use this program? I've spent about an hour trying to figure this out and am getting extremely frustrated.

I'm sorry Im so technically illiterate...=(

I will try to later tonight, but it would help to know where you are having problems

here is basic info (text)

extract files to any location (my documents is a good place)
in new folder you just extracted (dxwnd Fullscreen or dxwnd windowed) locate dxwnd.exe
right click dxwnd.exe select properties
in dxwnd.exe properties window select compatibility tab
in that tab check "run as administrator"
click on apply then OK
double click dxwnd.exe in dxwnd window you should see a list for birth of the federation game/mods (mods are installed separately)
if you see a green icon next to "Birth of the Federation" you are ready to go
just double click the green icon next to "Birth of the Federation"

if icon is not green install path may not be correct and will need to adjust path (see first post)

How can I use DxWnd and force the aspect ratio to be 16:9? I'm using the fullscreen version.

best way would be to install wide screen patch.

if no wide screen patch available for that mod, use windowed version and stretch window to edge of screen. this will leave the taskbar at bottom and window bar at top.
it would look something like this
