The quility of the effects, ships, sounds, the rest of the game doesn't amaze me: it's from Digital reality. those guys create games 3-6 years ahead in game technology of the rest of the game world.

It has been that way with all their games.

ablative armour is used as a replacement of shields.

you can either do these things:

1. create a new shield animation (ablative armour)

2. give your unit a weak shield and a strong hull.

no thanks but a last hope sugestion:

try to select the faces as much to the middle and zoom in.

but even if i download gmax, 3ds max 8 i still use milkshape to make the models, it is just very easy (in my opinion)

it is not difficult (yes, at the beginning but later......) just choose "select" with "face" and "ignore backfaces" checked. and then select the faces you want to extrude, and then use the extrude tool.
