any one know of a good guide as to the size to use for plating for a texture of 512*512.

i have managed to make a plating stucture that looks quite good, just not sure at to the size to scale it to, its for the Razorback ship btw.

Hmmm.... even at 512x512 it will depend on how you have scaled each item in comparison to each other for the texture.
If you are using PSP and you have the plating set in your textures folder (in texture options) I would scale it at probably 100 or 200% with depth of about 5 to 20 depending on how much detail you want to have appear. I hope this helps.
