Atlantis - The Lost City

Post by MajorPayne » Wed Aug 23, 2006 6:50 am

I know several people have already started on this structure so I thought I'd give it a go. Current poly count is around 2300 so I can afford around 2700 polys for the inner buildings and the main tower (which should be fun!!). I'll update this thread as the model is updated, and it'll be another of my 3ds mesh releases once I'm satisfied with the results.

......and so an update. The central spire and support towers are added, but have upped the poly count to 3693 so the projected poly count might be a bit higher than first thought. The thing is though, the main spire is the main focus so it demanded more detail than the rest. Anyway, heres the current WIP shots:

Shot 1: Gives a better idea of the scale from a distance shot.

Shot 2: Closer shot of the detail but not to close.

Shot 3: Shows lower viewing gantry.

Shot 4: Shows the upper main gantry.

Shot 5: The final shot shows the scale between the gantries and the rear of the tower. There is some detailing missing but when you consider that whats been done so far is around 85% less than its starting poly count its going well.

Textures for this beast could be a problem, but I'm sure I'll worry about that when the time is right. Anyway. I've now hit something of a brick wall. The basic premise of the city is that there are somewhere in the region of over 300 towers, spires and other constructs. Now this also means that if I keep going were looking at a model in the region of about 10k, which is far to high for Armada as far as I'm concerned. Therefore, I'm going to do some damage limitation and cut down the amount of constructs significantly. I am happy to get the main tower in place along with its support towers. This latest renders shows the 7 other main buildings that will be making multiple appearances on the model but for the most part other smaller detailing will be left off. Current poly count is 4367 (and this IS after optimising the model), so for now heres a new pic (doesn't show a great deal, but the idea is shown).

KevinJ. Yes, this will be for armada which is why I have to use my damage limitation method of cutting constructs of the model. It'll look a bit bare in places, but it'll be fine. As long as the textures which I'll be hunting for, are of reasonable quality this should be fine.
