I keep to the guidelines set by the earlier modders, as there's no point having 5'000+ poly models in a game like armada, so most of mine are under 2'000. Some of my meshes go up to 3600-3700, but generally they aren't the ones I keep ingame.

I don't mean to be disagreeable, but personally I do not yet see what the fuss is about with polys. I might as well admit it now: I have a model that exceeds 10000. Perhaps this is partially (moreso than I'd care to admit) miss-managing of polygons, but as long as it's only on my computer it's not hurting anyone anyway, I suppose. Even having built one of these, the game still runs fine, and I have an un-upgraded '98 Gateway. I hope everyone can forgive me for my absurd level of polyness.

True, it doesn't hurt anyone, but what do you gain from such a high polycount? In A2 the ships will rarely be bigger than 2 inches on your screen...

I don't gain or lose anything. And you're right, ships are small in A2. That's a big part of the reason that I generally prefer 1 (but not the only reason for sure). I may have nothing to gain, but I'm not really trying to have a super-high poly count, so whatever my final count is it has reached that number because I have tried to include every detail that I felt was necessary. But still, as I admitted earlier, sometimes the number reaches ridiculous levels in part because I lack a certain degree of talent in poly-preservation. But I rarely lose anything either, because my most poly-ish ships tend to be ones that I don't build many of. I don't think I've ever built more than one of my 10000 ship (I wouldn't need to). So yeah, I gain nothing, I lose nothing.

Time and effort, what with making the model, applying the texture maps to the individual parts, making sure the 'extra' details are correct... and, when the ship is so small ingame, you can't actually see the difference between a good 2000 poly model and a 10000 poly one.

PS: Plus, the more polys there are, the more likely you are to get mesh errors, the longer it will take to fix any errors, and the more difficult it will be to edit.

A good modeller isn't one who can make a great looking model that ends up with loads and loads of polys. A good modeller is one who can make a great looking model and it still be quite low-poly.

In the end it just comes down to being resourceful. If you make a model with 10'000 polys, it might look good, but at that polycount you'll seem lazy.

I aim models at around 1200, the highest poly model built in Armada is a little over 23,000 (Unicomplex)
