ok boys and girls if there's any girls heres my first ship other then the galaxy class of hms_custody from rookie to begginer phantom what do u tink?

Now how do u like that people the other ship was a bit s**t but with time i took effort in the constitution class. by the way havnt seen steveigirl for a long time.

Not bad custody. I think your getting the hang of things, but for pities sake keep at it.

If theres any time you want some on hands pointers with smoothing the edges on your models then give me a yell over MSN (if you use it).

I'd stop using spheres to model :) Unless your creating a Borg Sphere and even then no spheres were used for our one in FT, spheres are but ugly when you weld them which is why your getting all the shadowed edges. Its a bit match stick for my liking, why not 'buff' it up a little? Try using a 12-18x5 Cylinder rolled 90degrees and shaped for the stardrive rather than a nasty looking sphere? You can tweak the edges then to include the box points on there too.

Keep at it though as its improving with time :) If I can find you my early units I'll post em. I think the Warhammer Class Runabout is still on A2Files actually, that was like my 5th or 6th ship built lol. Scarry throught really as that'd have to be like 6 years old lol

My point though is start small.

Rather build the next Enterprise or the next Klingon superdooper bird of prey, start small and work up. Its the same advice I give everyone I've tutored up to modeling.

Start with the TNG Type 6 Shuttle (Goddard) build that and learn the basics of box modeling, give yourself a poly target, a shuttle like that should at best guess be 2-300 polies. Stick as much detail on it as you can like air vents on the grills, window frames etc and master the small stuff.

Then move up a notch to make a Constitution or something simplistic but educational.

Once you have done that, and made a small fleet of models then upgrade yourself to the next level by making an Excelsior or Galaxy, keeping the poly limit you want, and adding nice details like indented deflector housing, impulse struts, smooth pylons, etc etc.

Before you know it you'll be making detailed hi-res models without even realizing. Then the poly limitations you pick will come so second nature you wont even need to put them in!. I for example had a vision of the Borg Harvester, Set myself a 1100 limit cause i know the Borg nodes et au were gonna eat. I built what i wanted in 890 with lights and it looks fine. Without practice It would have been a considerable amount more. Remember just because you say: I'm gonna build a Sovereign in 1400 polies, doesn't mean you should go out of your way to make it 1400 polies, 800 or 1399 is enough :)

Looking at the models so far, I'd hazard your inside the 7-900 markers especially with the first model you posted. Something like that should just scrape somewhere between 80-120 polies.

Start small with limits and then build upwards and ease the limits. Experiment with trial and error and you'll get their eventually. Just takes a lot of practice.

Oh ok i never thought about the cylinder for the stardrive section but im only gunna get stuck on the part where u have to curve on the shuttle bay or do i just keep adding cylinders? by the way do i get a promotion to ensign? Also can texture be added in milkshape instead of using 2dsmax if so how do i add it? after you add the colours etc or do i use paintshop pro?

If you are talking about a Constitution style shuttle bay then yes.

Easiest way to add one is to build the bulk of the stardrive up. Then use a two stack cylinder, delete half of it and weld it to the current stardrive. Weld the points so its point to point on the top of the drive. Then shape it into the shuttle area. Then use boxes to smooth off the bottom and create the landing platform. Then use a quarter of a sphere to create the shuttlebay doors although they'll probably need scaling and stuff first :)

well i was alsmost close i did read the part but i wanted to try something else. and erm how do i add those triangular shape objects that go towards the nacelle.

thats my first project but as you can see i need to add the real life texture to complete the ship :) id also like to thank major payne for the help but stil need one last thing the real life texture this is the kind of ship iv bin workin on for a while next will be klingon and romulan to help phantom but this is my pride n joy also this is my new Klingon cruiser hope its ok

still it looks better then my first attempt i think your going to have to show me phantom its the only way. er yeh basic shapes is ok isnt it?
