Romulan Bird of Prey [WIP]

Been a Milkshape user for some time now and was intimidated with 3D Max. When Mr. Vulcan from the Armada community made a new SOD exporter script, I began to slowly tinker with Max as I was intrigued with making animations for the Armada models. More recently, I have kept my eyes on Phoenix’s Vor'cha Attack Cruiser over at BC, watching the build process with great interest. I certainly found inspiration from seeing all the detail go into that ship.

Well, the time has finally come for me to give Max a try. But which ship? I wanted something that wouldn’t be too hard and had good reference material. Plus, it couldn’t be a Federation design. The choice was made … the Romulan Bird of Prey. I look forward to hearing your comments and critiques. Unfortunately, this one will NOT make it to Armada as the poly count is quite high (20,592).

Never been fond of the TOS style of ship model, but this looks well sweet. As a suggestion, pepperman, you could always just make the textures for this as basic maps only and then render of a nice set of detailed maps when they're on the model. Making a lower poly model from this one wouldn't be difficult as you know. If, when your finished you dont want to give a lower poly version a go, I'll give it a shot if you like. I always enjoy a challenge.

Oh a quick edit. Something else that springs to mind. If your going for something seriously high poly then get those edges smoothed out. I've not modelled with 3dmax myself but after seeing some of the fantastic results that can be got with it when a modeller doesnt give themselves a restriction it can be well worth the attention to detail.

I think I’ll declare victory on this one and move onward and upward. I accomplished my goal of making a complete model in 3d Max. Being a Milkshape user for several years, I was intimidated by the thought of using Max but that fear has now been conquered. Without question, I learned a lot in the process. In many ways waiting this long to try Max was even more problematic. I’d watch a video on Youtube only to find out the version I’m using didn’t have that functionality. But even in this simple example, I got to experiment with arrays and the like. Once I got past the buttonology, things started to click.

While she’s not perfect by any means, the end result is decent quality. Granted, the triangle count is high (19,644) for such a simple model. But at the end of the day, I am satisfied with the effort and end result. Thanks to all for the advice and encouragement.

Now I'll need to make a low poly version and map these texture to it. :)

At Major Payne’s suggestion, I generated a lower poly version of the classic Bird of Prey from a higher poly model I had created to learn 3D Max. I have submitted a release of at A2 files which includes two versions: one with animation and one without. The animated version simulates swirling gases inside a transparent nacelle dome. Hopefully, you’ll find one or both to your liking and find a place for them in your collection. Not sure how long it will take to show up as filefront isn't what it used to be.

Will be having a look once its up :) Took about 5 days for my files to show up on the A2files.

Meant to reply to your earlier post, then forgot. If you've ever been registered at a post-secondary school (college, university, so on) you should be able to download a student version of the latest 3dsMax. Then you can model to your heart's content with all the latest features, and the youtube tutorials will be useful too ;)
