Mod Information (AKA"What is this mod about")

Post by SquireJames »

Hello fellow modders and players

For those that can remember that far back, I made KA:TC over three years ago now, and I thought it was about time I got back into the swing of things and made a new version for A2.

Basically, the premise is this. shortly before the events of "Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country" tensions were high along the Klingon-Federation Neutral Zone, and the Romulans were being as secretive as ever. However, the uneasy peace that had fallen over the galaxy was about to be shattered. The Federation, setting out to clear out the last remaning ISC strongholds on the fringe of our galaxy, left only reserve fleets, dangerously obsolete in some sectors, to guard the majority of its space, with the only modern powerful fleets left along the Klingon border.

The Klingon Empire was in much the same state, rebuilding its battle weary fleets. Barely recovering from a costly civil war after the death of Chancellor Lorak, the Klingon Empire was still split between the "radical" ideas of men like the new Chancellor, Gorkon, who incouraged an end to the cold war between the Klingon Empire and the United Federation of Planets, and the "conservative" views of some of his opponents, who argued it was better to die fighting, and to attempt to lash out at the Federation while the bulk of their forces was tied up fighting the still formidable remanants of the ISC. Indeed, General Chang, Gorkon's Chief of Staff, had run simulations at the Klingon Defence Force's Elite Command Academy only a few short months ago, and it did seem extraordinarily tempting.....

On the morning of December 7th, 2292, the Federation reserve fleet in space dock on the Gorn border, was viciously attacked by vessels of the Gorn Royal Navy. The old style Federation vessels were no match for the powerful Gorn vessels, and soon the Federation was in a state of Emergency. Ambassador Spock, seeing an historic oppotunity, sent a communique to Chancellor Gorkon, explaining the situation. Unbenknownst to Ambassador Spock, the Klingon fleets along the Klingon/Gorn border, had also come under fire.

Rejuvenated from its stagnant slump by its mobilisation during the War of Pacification, the Gorn Confederacy, seeing its own power wax and wane, while its neighbours grew and strengthened after the end of the war, decided to strike before its neighbours became a threat.

Chancellor Gorkon, responding to Ambassador Spock's communique, sent a fleet of warships lead by Colonel Thok'Mak, to assist the Federation and stop the Gorn invasion of Federation space. With the Federations fleets dispersed on the fringes of explored space, it was down to the Klingon Empire, now in a shaky mutual protection treaty with the Federation, that were left to defend the Alpha Quadrant. The Romulan Star Empire ever secretive, and the rumours that the ISC had somehow opened a gateway to another galaxy, things were about to rapidly get out of hand......

Well theres the backstory

The sides are

The United Federation of Planets
The Klingon Empire
The Romulan Star Empire
The Tholian Assembly
The Interstellar Concordion

Each side has its own strengths and weaknesses. The Federation are an all round race, their ships being neither tactically weak or strong, and their technology being their greatest strategic asset. However due to their peaceful nature, the Federation requires more research to bring its bigger vessels into the breach than other races.

The Klingons have fast, heavily armed vessels, but their shields are weaker, and their do not have as advanced warp drives or manufacturing technology as the Federation, so they suffer economically.

The Romulans have powerful torpedo armament on their vessels, and work on a first strike principle. However their vessels have weaker shields, the Romulans prefering to rely on hull armour, since most of the time their vessels are cloaked and shields do not function whilst cloaked.

The Gorn use big, powerful, but lumbering vessels. They also have less available classes. prefering to use a few simple classes rather than specialised vessels. The immense structural strength of their ships however, is ofset by their long and difficult construction.

The Tholians have extremely powerful marines, due to their native enivronment being lethal to all other races crew. However, their vessels have a small crew for their size, and they are unable to trade or interact with other races in a meaningful manner (due to their extremely intricate language, and manic xenophobia)

The Interstellar Concordion are the Borg of their time. They are arrogant, have an extreme superiority complex, and believe it is their role to control all other races to prevent war, in their so called "Wars of Pacification". However, in their skewed idea of peace, they cause even greater bloodshed. Their vessels are quite self sufficient, as their homeworld is far from the rest of populated space. They have quite advanced science, and their vessels use some pretty alien technology, using some sort of subspace portal technology, in addition to conventional warp and impulse drives. They can repair ships quicker than other races, but since they do not favour long term bases, stations are quite expensive. Also they do not believe in trade, they conquer, as they percieve all races as "primitive and savage"

gameplay wise, i've also added (thanks to the planetary collection by shadow) the full range of planet classes in the star trek universe (shadow made some errors, so using wikipedia i revamped them all) , and I plan to make different planets mine different things (the more volcanic or newly formed planets obviously dont have solid metal deposits, but they do have dilithium and other crystaline deposits due to their geothermcal activity) I've also updated some of the graphics for space objects (black holes and the like)

I will post screenshots as soon as I have gotten around to taking some

@ Darklight: My mistake, the Gorn Confederacy are a playable race. However there will be unplayable races making an appearance, the Orion Pirates for example, and there will be some campaign only ships (TOS Era ships for the Federation, for the Federation Reserve Fleet)

The storyline will hopefully follow the progress of the shocking Gorn Invasion of Klingon and Federation Space, the last battles against the ISC, and the disasterous results of their last ditch attempt to defeat the empires of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. I plan to have several twists, and essentially I hope to somewhat bridge the gap between Star Fleet Command II EAW (and the ill fated second expansion, Galaxies at War) and the storylines of Klingon Academy and Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country.
