In US Navy Hull Designations (which SFB/SFC/SFA and KA use) "BB" is the code for Battleship. "BBX" is "Battleship Experimental"
A short paragraph i wrote on a news post about the Yamato Class
Although unusual for the Federation to have something so clearly warlike, the Yamato is Utopia Planitia's response to the demand set by the more military departments of Starfleet (especially the defence division headed by Admiral Cartwright and Colonel West) for a vessel that could demonstrate to the citizens of the Federation (and more secretly, the Federations agressive neighbours) the pinnacle of Federation science and power.
(Historical Note: The now mothballed USS Langley was the technology demonstrator for the Yamato, and also lead to the development of the QCB, Assault Phaser and Missouri Class projects. The premise behind such ships was long remembered by starfleet, and the Galaxy and Sovereign Classes owe their existance to the tradition established by the Yamato Class)
