How much of Star Wars is canon?

Post by Raptor » Thu Jun 09, 2005 9:18 pm

There was a little argument in the This or That? thread, so I thought I'd put it in debates. In your opinion, how much of Star Wars is Canon? Here's the view I hold, and that has been accepted by many die-hards:

Everything sold under the name Star Wars is canon, but ranked. The ranking is as follows:

1. George Lucas
2. Episodes 1-6
3. Books about Episodes 1-6, Star Wars.com
4. Novels endorsed by Lucas set before, during, or after Episodes 1-6 (or any part thereof), Comics (same attributes as novels)
5. 4. Games created under Star Wars name (by or with assistance from Lucas Arts)
6. Books written about the Star Wars universe (Ultimate Guide to Star Wars Ships and Stations)

3rd party sites are not considered canon, but can be used if they are created using canon material.

and yes, I saw www.st-v-sw.net/STSWCanon2A.html , but didn't care. It's a 3rd party website :P

Everything in the Expanded Universe without an Infinities label assigned by Lucasfilm or Lucasbooks, as well as the movies, is part of continuity.

blah...you're no fun. Besides, Lucas changed his mind. He endorsed the books...and any conflicts can be explained (such as the Boba Fett one mentioned on your site....Lucas could have meant the Fett "appeared" to die, but then changed his mind later but didn't want to ruin it for readers.. :P)

Lucas's companies have approved everything in the Expanded Universe and have special designations for works that are outside of Star Wars continuity, thus establishing that they believe that there is a Star Wars continuity that includes all works of the Expanded Universe that have not been given that special designation to separate them from other Expanded Universe material.

Raptor, did you not include video games made by any of Lucas's companies in your list for a reason?

I think the films and the EU are cannon, but the films take priority over the EU.

Games are near the bottom of the canon list, although their storylines are considered canon as long as they on't conflict with any higher level canon.
