Public opinion on pre-federation mining

Post by Bryan »

Ok, in the days of Archer and the NX, im asuming there isnt a lot of deep space mining capabilities and that most of the resources used to build that eras starships come from Earth itself, or the moon.

I was toying with the idea of leaving out the orbital mining facility and mining facility in this era, and giving sufficient starting resources to get through this era until these facilites become available in the TMP era....

wot do you all think?

Not a bad idea, but wouldn't they have them before the TMP era even before the TOS era. The federation had been around for 100 years by the time Kirk took command of the 1701. I'd make them available as the Federation is founded.

forgot to mention that im skipping the TOS era in the mod, as basically the ships are pants and dont fit in with the other eras, so the mining facilities will become available in the TMP era

i would have to agree with rod on this one, since there are not a lot of resourses on Earth, they would branch out to find more after the Federation was founded

If you intend to keep with your idea of no mining stations, then I suggest you have some sort of mining on the starting planet; though that is my opinion.

Erm, reading the title of this topic it seems Bryan was asking about "PRE-federation". As in, BEFORE the federation was founded. ;-)

Well there's a mining base on the Moon in the NX era, so perhaps make something from that...?

Well, orbital mining facilities could be used (Helium 3 - google it as energy source) but instead of actually orbiting the planet they could be built attatched if possible?

what about a when you colonize a planet don't have an orbital mining facility just include say a build option in the planet properties to build a mining facility then research an upgrade that will produce a facility in space.

this maybe possible, ill look into it, would give the idea of having to "branch out to other planets" for resources.

Hey in the Federations time line they found the resources needed for warp on jupiter/mars ( cant remember which 1 , they found the crystals before the the first warp flight ) . and i agree with both methods of mining ( Planet born base and a deep space 1 ) .
