Armada 2 slowdown problems

Post by zanes » Sun Nov 30, 2008 7:47 pm

Right, I've just bought a (genuine) copy of armada 2 off ebay, and am trying to play it on my laptop. Only problem is, I'm getting weird slowdowns. It seems fairly random, but it seems especially to happen when something is being built, and when more than ~20 ships are on the screen. But then sometimes the game almost "overspeeds"
I'm running original armada 2 patched to v1.1 official, my laptop of PoWah specs are;
Athlon XP 1800+
256mb RAM
Shared Radeon graphics
10gb+ free hard disk
Windows XP SP3

At the moment i'm leaning towards a graphics issue, but I'm not sure whether maybe this is a known problem.

Hi,

I think you have a notebook specific problem.

It is the shared memory of your graphics card.
I do not know how much you know about computers or more precisely notebooks.

Shared Memory means that your installed graphics card has no RAM of its own, but instead uses a part of the RAM that is installed in your notebook.

The same RAM which your notebook uses to run windows and all other applications you have installed.

With 256MB installed you will see that windows will use half of it.
The rest is used to run the program you are using and also for the needs of your graphics card.

Simply put, you are running out of RAM at a certain point and your computer will slow down.

You could solve the problem by installing additional RAM if possible.

In general a shared memory is never a good idea.

Greetings

Hi Shadow,

Yeah, initially I thought that the laptop was running out of memory, but there is no hard drive activity associated with the slow down (so I don't think it's running out of memory and using virtual memory, which is what I assumed it would do). I suspect that you might be on to something with the laptop specific problem though, I suspect I may have to put armada away until I go home for the holidays.

hi

yes it is a laptop issue as XP needs 512MB of ram to run 1GB or more is preferred

with the laptop only having 256MB the laptop is stuggling to run itself never mind a game i would get some more memory for the laptop

once you get some more memory you will find the laptop will now play armada 2 fine with no problems

i hope this helps you

Cheers Matty,

Have realised when I was running EF II I had another 512mb stick in the laptop, so looks like I'll be replacing that. Interestingly, XP reckons it only needs 128mb (recommended) to run. Will update when I've got some more RAM.

Generaly...slowdown isues are coused by your video card, sometimes,"It can't take anymare cap'n!!",and bogs it down from heat!Like the old playstation.....playing c&c/C&C:RedAlert!Upgrade to a video card that has a fan to keep the GPU COOL!Mine ,I use a fan from an old HP I have lying around,a little electric tape, and vwalat...she can handle more...or atleast not get boggy...or....slowdown!
"He´s dead Jim,you get the tri-corder,I´ll get his wallet."
