Re: Anyone else hit by the Lavabit shutdown?

All this tracking and profiling is deeply disconcerting. And the databases they build with that information are just plain scary. It's getting way out of hand. In any case, for commercial entities, extensive profiling is *not* needed for effective advertising (see Minecraft marketing strategy ). Lik...

Re: BOTF appreciation thread

I believe Paramount's policy has always been to not to interfere with fan fiction, fan games, etc., so long as NO MONEY IS INVOLVED -- this includes donations & sponsorship. So that kills the Kickstarter idea. I've seen people on others sites talking about this stuff, including my own BotF Clone...

Re: Anyone else hit by the Lavabit shutdown?

In years of review of the millions of lines of code in this game, we STILL do not completely grasp 700 meg of data in BotF. Does anyone REALLY think an agency of 10,000 people can read everyone's email? Those are two totally different things. We don't have the code to BotF, we've had to reverse eng...

Re: Anyone else hit by the Lavabit shutdown?

I'm back in business. Migrating all my online accounts to my new email address was less painful than I anticipated, but it did take a while. And it turns out my email client cached all my emails on my computer, so I haven't lost a single mail  While I resetting the email addresses, I also took...

Re: Should Buying things be allowed?

Myself and thunderchero discussed updating already. But here is not really the place to discuss it (i.e. on a public forum). We don't want to give anyone crazy ideas

Re: Help Needed on Hex Editor Neo

Evidently you made a mistake somewhere. You can't really fix that. You're going to have to start over. So grab a fresh copy of Trek.exe, and try again. I'd say forget about the databanks for the moment - that part looks complicated. Try to patch for more farms and factories, and once you get that wo...

Re: Help Needed on Hex Editor Neo

Lol, I thought I saw a monkey for a second. I must be imagining things.

Hmm, maybe try jumping to offset 18E2B8 (without 0x at the start). If that doesn't work, you can just scroll down the file. The offsets are those numbers listed on the left side. Just scroll down until you reach 18E2B8.

Re: Anyone else hit by the Lavabit shutdown?

Unlikely. Incidentally, does anyone know how to change the email address associated with an AFC account? I've come to rely on the email notifications. The email field in the accounts page seems to be locked. Everything else can be edited :???:

EDIT: sorted

Anyone else hit by the Lavabit shutdown?

In case you haven't heard, the secure email provider Lavabit has shut down operations rather than cooperate with U.S. government spies. Apparently, Edward Snowden had been using it for email, so I guess the Feds were hitting Lavabit with National Security Letters or the like. And it seems they shut ...

Re: Help Needed on Hex Editor Neo

Basic steps: Open Trek.exe in a hex editor Use to hex editor to navigate to offset 0x18E2B8 . I've never used Neo, but I know in WinHex there's a "go to offset" command. You might see something like this: 0018e2b8 0a 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0a 00 00 00 |................| 0018e2c8 ...

Re: Should Buying things be allowed?

So I would say they are still building both structures and ships. Noice. would they have built more if patch was not there? this is hard to tell. There's an STBOF.INI option called STARTINGSEED. Maybe that would be useful for comparisons. Just play two games with/without the patch with the s...

Re: Should Buying things be allowed?

I don't think my "mega-prices" patch is working very well with the AI. I turned on Mudd. I don't think the AI is building anything new. Thunderchero said that the AI only buys things anyway as part of it's strategy. Here's the code patch I used, in case other people want to experiment: NAM...

Re: Should Buying things be allowed?

Perl is nice for prototyping things that would take forever to write in C/C++. But I always need a reference manual handy when I'm using it. With regard to the question "Should buying things be allowed?", I'm inclined to agree with thunderchero. Removing the buy option could make games mor...

Re: Should Buying things be allowed?

On note 1, I once found entries in the lexicon database about transferring food, population, etc. to different systems. Unfortunately, the code for processing such orders is missing in BotF... I was gonna do the bigger build queue before. I just forgot about it. It can definitely be done, it would j...
