What other classic (strategy or space) games do you like?

Since we are aficionados of a 10-year old strategy game, I wondered what other old games people might play. Here's mine: Master of Orion II -- Precursor to BotF ("4x" space game), better in some ways, not in others... ironically under XP it ends up being more crashy and buggy for me than B...

Yeah, my usual response to a crash: "Well, I guess I'm done for the night!" But I usually don't go to bed any earlier...

Sure, they can take out a cube if say, half of them are right there waiting wherever the cube pops up. Otherwise, the cube will probably spawn more cubes before I can get there, then I'm toast. Hasn't happened yet in this game... I do have Rubicun, though. Is the Edo God immune to cubes?

I can't even imagine trying to play multiplayer with a game this crashy. I'm just glad I can save now. Finally passed 200 turns. 8) Ferengi on hard, was actually pretty easy, I've just waited forever to invade, still haven't. Just kept bribing people to like me. And even though I have a fleet of abo...

This information needs to be re-posted here.

If you want to stop the crashing-while-saving problem, simply hit the Enter key instead of clicking Accept.

This WORKS. Thanks again to Krazee for this vital information.

Krazee -- your suggestion about hitting the enter key when saving, instead of mouse-clicking Accept -- WORKS! Just played through 15 turns of my old game, didn't change the install or anything else, no crashes. Kudos, my friend . After 10 years I finally know how to reduce the crashing. Be...

One thing you can do (after affiliation) is wait until a minor race has advanced before making the last donations to make them members. They can often be ridiculously more powerful. Vulcan is one of the best if they join later... I was in a bit of a crunch one game, then got the Vulcans as members, ...

Borg are the equivalent of knocking over your gameboard in Risk. Romulans can defend against them because of cloak first-strike... maybe some other situations like enormous fleets, or maybe if you have the Edo then that can be your refuge system? Otherwise in a regular game, everyone is done f...

I'm not sure at what morale you risk losing the system to revolt, but I make sure to build the Martial Law / Inquisition / etc morale-boost early enough so that it kicks in before it goes below 50. For instance, if Martial Law takes 5 turns, that means 5 turns of preparation. So if you begin it when...

2 slots sounds interesting. I may try that. I may also run some tests in trying various ways to try to FORCE crashing. Like, clicking on things really fast as opposed to slow, and comparing what happens.

What difficulty level? I can usually get by without a good fleet for a while even on Hard... but instead of building a fleet I am expanding as far as I can, and pumping my infrastructure as hard as I can. I'm usually slow to start making my war fleet because I'd rather expand and get the engine of p...

Nope, XP Pro. Although I do have a messed up thing on my machine where when I close a file or program, the whole system freezes for like 4 seconds. I even wiped my HD and reinstalled fresh, still have it. I was sure it was registry corruption but it isn't. Maybe it's something I have running, like A...

Well, lately I've been getting crashes when saving the game. Kind of a vicious paradox. I haven't even gotten far enough into this game to get much combat, haven't even triggered any combat crashes...

Has anyone had success reducing crashes by changing sound drivers? Or by turning sound off entirely?

1. What is the "norm" for frequency of crashes? 2. Is this the usual thing that happens -- complete visual freeze, sound looping over and over? 3. Multi-installer -- would that also include the original CD install, or completely from ISO or whatever? Would suck to own the CD and not use it...
