I was wonder if their is a way to add larger then 512*512 gifs to ship models? So that you can zoom in all the way on a ship and it still look good in game play.

No, but now we are using multi tex models I just finished 4 of them with 4 256x256 texture each. and they look real good when zoomed in on.

I think Jigalypuff toyed with the option of adding larger textures to ships at one time. I'm not sure if he was successful, though. There may well be a limit that sets 512x512 pixel as a maximum. If you are to use Hades Patch (which I'd recommend for much better stability in combat), you'll be limited to 256x256 textures anyways.

Well, if larger textures or higher quality file formats don't work, you can still resort to using more textures per model. Everything indicates that the number of textures is not limited to four. So you can possibly use more textures to achieve the same effect you would be getting by using larger textures.

won't larger size slow down the game?

It may. Using more texture per ship almost certainly will if too many ships are present. From what we can learn from UDM III, both the fact that the models are high-poly and that they are using 3 textures each does not necessarily contribute to smooth game performance. Then again, systems today are much more powerful than they were back in '99, so it may be worth a try...
