Mac download

Post by coreRoss »

I have never owned a windows PC, so when I did play Birth of the Federation it was on my friends computer. After those excellent experiences I never played Birth of the Federation for almost a decade.

I even bought the game although I never had a computer to use it on. I have tried a few emulators over the years but none to much success.

Until I found the porting tools provided free at http://portingteam.com/

I used the CXEx Porter found at http://portingteam.com/CXExProject to create a working version of BOTF for the Mac.

I thought I should share it, you can download it here, Link.

I also used the Multi-installer version of Birth of the Federation 1.0.2. None of the files require editing so all Multi-installer Mods will work fine although using a different process.
Instructions on how to run the Mods can be found here, Link.

The port runs at full screen using a software render.

Requirements:

This port requires Apple's X11 or the open-source XQuartz to be installed.
X11 can be found on your original OSX install DVD.
Also X11 or XQuartz can be downloaded here:
http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/Releases

This port also uses the CXExAquamarineEngine (will install automatically on launch).

I tested Birth of the Federation on my iMac Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz running Mac OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.5.

Multiplayer will not work. The game runs using a "Wrapper" so it actually has no contact with the world outside.

Credits:

Multi Installer 1.0.2 of Birth of the Federation was used.

This port was created using CXEx Porter
http://portingteam.com/CXExProject

And most credit goes to Birth of the Federations original creators Microprose.

Mods:

Mods can be installed and they must be Multi-installer Mods (advanced uses can do more). Instructions for installing Mods can be found here, Link.
I also made up a few icons to use with Mods.
