Ram bug 'fix'

Post by mickar »

Anyway, as my fleet of beautiful rom wb3's went down to the vicious ram killing fed, a thought occurred to me:

Wouldn't it just be better to remove the ram option from the order list?

Personally, I hate the ram. I think it ruins battles and takes away from what battles are supposed to be. And with ships having such high shields and hulls in our mods, there really is no way to prevent a ramming ship from reaching you and ram killing you.

Lets get the thoughts of the botf community.

I had already suggested this at some point. When flocke set up a special version of 1.0.3 for a tournament. I did have a working file for this at some point. also a file to allow recloaking during battle. (draw dack was all ships could do this regaurdless if they had cloak or not)

As to your poll I am of the fence and could go either way.

Cards needs ram for balance in most mods
But I hate ram command myself (using it and when it is used)

I agree that card needs ram in certain mods, but that could easily be remedied.

And for those who might think I'm against ram because I lost a game to it; I won the UDM tournament because of card ram. I'm just against it because it ruins battles and is not very realistic.

btw tc, what happened to my tourney pic below my name? ppl were asking :? :? :?

All I can see is 2 lines of: UDMIII tournament winner. The icon/badge thing is not there anymore.

Not a big deal for me, just that some people were asking. :? :? :?

no Ramming is a perfectly exceptable tactic -- although it's a blood waste it is sometimes the only option left to an out classed commander.

Its a difficult question, on the one hand I would also see ram removed to ensure more challenging Spacebattles, on the other hand we have seen quite a number of ram maneuvers in e.g. DS9 Dominion War episodes.

I think I am fine with either removing ram or making use of Gowrons solution that a ship is destroyed if it chooses to ram another ship, regardless if it has more HPs and takes down the target ship or if it has less HPs and only damages the target vessel. I think this solution is reasonable because besides the exceptional situation in Nemesis where the Sovereigns selfdestruct sequence was not available, all ships that are to ram an opponent are basically on a suicide mission with some sort of selfdestruction set up (warpcore overload etc.).

maybe remove ram for some empires and keep it for other the Cards, fergs and feds probably shouldn't ram the Romulans should clock and b@gger off and the Klingons (& dominion) should still ram as this has been seen in the shows.

If SCT's ram fix works then I would say keep ram as an option! :)

Something else to consider:

With such large shields/hulls in the mods, the ship with the bigger hull can have 0 torps and 0 phasors and will still win the battle.

unless we take into consideration that larger ships with larger MASS will have slower speeds and reduced agility, the smaller more agile ships run circles around them evading their beams and torpedoes until decisively decimating the enemy spacecraft... :P

That's all I see as well. The badge/icon is not visible to me.

I second this.

I don't like the use of ramming as a standard tactic in space battles. If it's used at all, though, then it should at least be a suicide maneuver.

would it be possible to prevent ships from firing their weapons when trying to ram another ship??
this would make it a bit more risky for the rammer, if he misses his target and 'losing' a full turn of firing his weapons.
