Loving the Tholian layout pigman. Hat's off to you on that :D

On a slighly different note. Minor races.

I don't know what you have planned, but Chestermike suggested to me about having the First Federation in All the Ages.
As to which I replied I can't do as I can't do ship models, but I did say I'd pass the suggestion onto your guys as they'd fit in well in your mod, or so I thought anyway.

Well I guess it is possible, but the question is which ship to build...the Fesarius would be a little too much I believe.

Something about a mile in diameter according to the show.
She'd be like a TOS Borg cube as fas as scale is concerned.
Imagine what happened if someone had the First Federation join him and get his hands on a couple of these...

Well how about that little pilot ship Balak later used to tow the Enterprise away?

It was made up of three of four of those glowing orbs on the exterior if I remember right.

Or, as you said about them being a TOS borg cube, have them as a random event. Peaceful explorers if you hail them, but they'll obliterate your fleet if you attack them or something.

A bit like Gomtuu really.

Well, I guess some of that typical TNG stuff will need to be replaced anyway.

The Borg Cube by the Doomsday Machine?
Gomtuu by the Fesarius?
The Crystal be the Space Amoeba?
The Husnock by Brannon Braga?

Of course this would make the First Federation with their "Pilot ships" and the Fesarius independent, but I guess that shouldn't be such a big deal, right?

No proposal for the Monisian combat drone right now...

Minosian combat drone...how about Nomad?

The First federation would probably work better as a random event owing to the fact we know next to nothing about them. hell they never get mentioned again, save for the odd drinker in Quark's requesting tranya.

I do seem to remember JBl or Carcher joking about having Khan in a stolen Reliant as a random event ages ago in a discussion I was having about Q.

Well, it would be completely insane but I always liked how Trelane attacked the Enterprise in Star Trek: Judgment Rites in a Triplane. :-)
That would make one random event nobody expects the first time around.

As for what we "know" about most races that serve as minors in BOTF and its MODs is extremely limited in any case.
I mean even the Gorn only appeared once in TOS, once in TAS and once in the Enterprise Mirror Universe.
And they are a Major race in this mod.
This means we have to go by secondary materials anyway, like SFB for their ships and maybe even a bit about their history.

When we compare what we know about the First Federation with what we know for example about the Mintakans or the Chalnoth it's pretty much the same.
Considering how advanced they are they could replace one of the "bonus on research" - races like the Caldonians

Oh and they did appear on the big map in TNG "Conspiracy".

One not-in-universe theroy why they were never mentioned again has to do with the fact that in early TOS the Enterprise was called an Earth Vessel, not only by the Romulans but by the Enterprise's crew itself.
This was because the makers hadn't come up with the idea that Earth was part of a bigger Federation itself.
For example in "The Conscience of the King" the Library Computer talked about Earth Forces not Federtion Forces.
So my guess would be they never mentioned it again because it might have confused the audience.

Hello everyone.

JBL said if I wanted to I could make a little preview of what I am doing with the Gorn ships.
Well the problem is that I've done some minor redesigns recently and JBL hasn't given the green light on them yet.
Unfortunately I can't reach him right now but I hope he doesn't mind what I am doing with those ships.
Here is the evolution to the point he said was allright:

http://img171.localhost-textreplaced/im ... bctex1.jpg

http://img30.localhost-textreplaced/img ... bctex2.jpg

Since them I have added sensor arrays behind the deflector dish and to the wings.
There are also impulse engines and a shield grid on the wings.
The original SFB Gorn ships have torpedo launchers on their wingtips, represented by big red spheres.
I replaced those with the sensors and moved the torpedo launch apparatus into the center of the deflector dish.
Until I know what colour those torps are going to have that part is blue
There are also two (not three like on the SFB Gorn CA) shuttle haganrs on each side.
You may also note that I have changed the texture on the nacelles and made the nacelles themselves a little thinner, they were too massive.

http://img193.localhost-textreplaced/im ... c2tex3.jpg

http://img40.localhost-textreplaced/img ... c2tex2.jpg

Now the real change since thursday.
A friend of mine complained that the black stripes on the Gorn hull are too fat and not that fitting in general.
He asked me why I don't make the hull like that of a crocodile.

Well I tried that out on the bubble sections and it looked like this:

http://img197.localhost-textreplaced/im ... atetex.jpg

Since I was quite satisfied with this I have made a few improvements so assuming JBL says it's okay the ships will look like a lot like this when they are finished:

http://img14.localhost-textreplaced/img ... tetex2.jpg

Of course the center hull and the wings will be modified accordingly with the somewhat too bright and too-much-like-a-Borg-interface sensors replaced by something moe appealing.
The shuttle bays will become part of this pattern as will the shield grid and impulse engines.
And of course the warp nacelles will reflect this change as well.
This will give the appearance that every part of the ship is integrated into the hull structure.
Right now everything liiks like it was drawn by a child.
Stay tuned and forgive the drastic changes, I am still learning texturing on a non-noob level. :)

The in-universe idea behind this new texture is that the Gorn use biomimetics in their ship construction which is the main reason why their ships are so tough.
In addition to a simple robust hull shape, the ships use a scale plating similar to Gorn skin, which makes those warships very hard to kill.

Here is another update on what I've done so far:

I've taken a look at the shiplist and condensed it down to the most important ships to comply with the current list of required shipclasses for this mod.
Then I've taken a look at the obvious gaps in the list and designed my own ships and fixed installations to fill them.
For both the existing and the new ships I've looked at the principal design aestetics of the SFB Gorn and the thoughts behind the designs.
Since some of the ideas behind the ships are not compatible with modern Trek, like that the power for the ships is generated inside the nacelles, I made a few changes to make it work again.
As a result designs like the BDD look a little different from their current SFB incarnation.

Gorn ships have a central hull, which contains the primary power generators for both Warp and Impulse.
The wings contain the impulse engines and the main shield grid and sensor array.
Shuttle hangars (doors at the top) and cargo bays (larger doors at the bottom) are also part of the main body.
In front of and behind the main hull, the Gorn attach so-called bubble sections that contain most weapons (for differences about that from SFB see my previous post), both beam and torpedo-type.
They also feature additional power generators, shield emitters tactical sensors and most of the crew and command facilities.
Note on the names for those of you who don't know:
The names given for the ships are not the names the Gorn give their ships, those are the designations given to them by Federation intelligence people.

Of the most common warship hulls, there are two versions, a light and a heavy version.
The differ in the amound of bubbles attached to the main hull.
The first ship you will receive is the Carnosaurus, which will serve as your basic scout. In SFB terms this is the Carnosaurus-s.
At first glance it is identical to the destroyer, the Ceratosaurus except that it is lacking the rear bubble.
However the textures will show that the Caratosaurus is a real warship while the Carnosaurus has multiple senror arrays on the bubble section.

Scout/Destroyer:
Length: 173 m
Width: 82 m
Height: 53m
There is little point in two images for almost identical ship so were the destroyer, note that since the wings and the nacelles mark the outer edges of the ship, the scout and the destroyer have the same measurements.

http://img43.localhost-textreplaced/img ... 4views.jpg

With the Light, Megalosaurus, and Heavy Cruiser, Allosaurus, the situation is fairly similar.
The Allosaurus has more of everything, this includes an additional set of tactocal sensors on the rear bubblt to give it better tarteting capabilties to all sides.

Light/Heavy Cruiser:
Length: 260 m
Width: 100 m
Height: 55 m

http://img23.localhost-textreplaced/img ... 4views.jpg

The Dreadnought, called Tyrannosaurus uses three cruiser bubbles and features a short hull between bubbles A and B that contains the impulse systems while the longer one between bubbles B and C contains the warp, shuttle ans cargo facilities.

Dreadnought.
Length: 332m
Width: 143m
Height: 65m

http://img32.localhost-textreplaced/img ... 4views.jpg

The nextpair of ships is a new design of mine.
In SFB, there are not supprot hulls I could use so I had to create a new basic hull and the required modules fill the Troop Transport and Colony ship slots.
The design is atmospheric capable and has larger than usual wings that contain big impulse engines.

The Colony Ship, called Thalassodromeus, is...ugly yet functional.
It has two large sensor/deflector arrays to properly map and scan a planet to determine the proper course of action to terraform the traget.
Since this is TOS and somewhat more primitive than TNG-style Colony Ships we usually see in Botf, I went for a look that showed the need for bulky equipment to get the job done.

http://img32.localhost-textreplaced/img ... 4views.jpg

The Troop Transport, Liaoningopterus, uses a more stremlined forward hull to get down toward the planet more quickly.
I thought about what would make up the ground defense value.
Not merely soldiers on the ground but everything from AA missiles to small Phaser/Disruptor batteries to armed shuttles and aerospace fighters.
So you need to get your trrops down quick and safe :)
This little baby will land where it needs to land and when it opens its large cargo doors you will see something that will make Klingons drop their disruptors and Bath'leths while running for cover: an entire army of angry Gorn soldiers coming at you with sidearms that will make the .5 Desert Eagle look like a toygun.

http://img4.localhost-textreplaced/img4 ... 4views.jpg

Size of the support ships to be determined at a later date.

There is very little to say about the Outpost and the Starbase.
I mean they just hang there, extend your range and shoot at the bad guys.
Size unknow at this time.

Outpost:
http://img23.localhost-textreplaced/img ... 4views.jpg

Starbase:
http://img39.localhost-textreplaced/img ... 4views.jpg

The ships will receive a refit to the movie era, just like the Federation ships, with the deflector dish vanishing inside an extension of the forward hull and new warp engines on familiar nacelle pylons.

The Battleship is a bit of a questionmark at the moment.
The Godzilla Class will mist likely appear at the end of the tech tree, so she will not have a TOS incarnation.
She's basically what you have seen of the dreadnought just the hull and the bubbles are 50% wider.
A few special ships are possible but it has not been decided yet which ones are in or out.

So now for something more colourful:
We've agreed on a set of textures for the ships.
The big ships, Cruisers and above, will use one that emphasizes armor, so will the stations.
The destroyers and the supports each will receive a different one.
The one for the supports will be designed to reduce friction in a planetary atmosphere, the destroyers...we'll see :)

So here the look of the larger ships shown a heavy cruiser:

Note the tactical sensors on the front bubble behind the deflector, sensors and shield grid on the wings.
http://img13.localhost-textreplaced/img ... cales1.jpg

Shuttle doors on the main hull, impulse engines on the wings
http://img22.localhost-textreplaced/img ... cales2.jpg
http://img30.localhost-textreplaced/img ... cales3.jpg
http://img41.localhost-textreplaced/img ... cales4.jpg

I can promise this is not final, the textures are still evolving as are my skills (I hope  )

I hope you all enjoyed my little preview and I hope you are all as exited about this mod as I am.

i would really like to see the TOS doomsday device as a random event (like the Borg et al) but for it to actually distroy a planet each turn. This would make it a real problem as a trail of empty star systems with no real value was left in its wake -- can you imagine the report on the summary page:

Doomsday Machine in Sector A5 Sol destroys Pluto

and if you don't sort that out...

Doomsday Machine in Sector A5 Sol destroys Earth

and eventually

Doomsday Machine in Sector A5 Sol destroys Murcury
All life in Sol Destroy by the Doomsday Machine

--

yes i know the code isn't avaliable to do this but it would be a real Bu**er to deal with in larger games; as even if your fleet is close enough to get to it, your gonna loose quite a few planet very quickly!

I see it as alot harder to kill than the crystaline entity but not as pervasive as the borg.

I almost wonder if this could be arranged...

So when the Borg attack, they turn planets into that wasted, barren planet. There has to be code somewhere that makes the change. If found, it might be possible to replace the planet image files with a debris field. If the "debris planet" could be made the same class as the gas giants, it would be uninhabitable. I guess the big question is what happens if a system is full of uninhabitable planets?

Or more importantly, would the code allow changing the Borg cube-spawning?

An interesting idea. A bit sadistic, but interesting. :)

I don't think you could do one planet at a time, but you should be able to destroy the whole system at once.
