TOS MOD -- suggestons and ideas needed please

It has long been a request on this sight that a mod of the original game be made that is set with in the Original Series time frame.

To that end I am hoping to produce such a mod for the community but afew hudles stand in my way.

1. There need to be five Major races, Human, Klingon, and Romulan are a given but which races should replace the ferengi and cardassians?

-- My personal initial opinion is for Gorn and Tholian.

2. There needs to be thirty minor races.

The last mod in this direction also intended to employ the Gorn and Tholians and I think it's a good combination.
A lot of the ideas discussed back then would still be valid.
There are also Pigman's wonderful interface redesigns.

I seem to remember there were some plans to revive the old mod team, but it would seem nothing came of it.
Since I was involved a little in the old mod as someone who worked on the Gorn ships and genereally annoyed people with lots of questions I am still sad the old project just stopped and I'd still love to see a TOS MOD.
In my case personal reasons prevented me from...I don't know...doing more than I did and I still wonder whether I could have done more.

ever thought about adding the mirror empire to your tos mod instead of the Gorn or Tholians?

you'd have similar ships with some minor texture changes.

instead of 4 races with only 1 known shiptype you'd only have 3

I know ships are the biggest hurdle, I was thinking of running the mod to the end of ST6:TUC including some Klingon Academy ships, as they all seemed well designed -- It's one reason i started this thread to see what peoples thought were.

In three series of TOS we saw very little of the other races in the Star Trek universe -- indeed the fact that my list of minors has to include ENT and movie race is a testiment to the sparceness of the episodes.

I could include Triskellions but what would diplomacy be like for them I raise you 10,000 quotloos? - decline/accept?

Klingon Academy as a source would certainly be most logical (no pun intended), as would be Star Fleet Battles for TOS and FASA for TOS and a little Movies era stuff.

The ships from Klingon Academy itself are not conversion-friendly to say the least.
I picked the KA.Dat apart with the converter for DAT files used for Fallout 1.
As it turned out the damage effects we can see on KA ships are included into the models.
So there are actually layers over layers of polygons where the ship is damaged and undamaged at the same time.
After removing most of the damage-ploygons, it looked like this:

take the point MrD -- just throwing the spagetti against the wall at the moment to see what stick -- would love some off these ships though I know the insurection class is out there.

:p Orions too. Actually Tholians would make more sense than Kzinti. Oh, you're doing the Gorn instead? Enh... works I guess.

if I recall TOS... there must be some kind of monster in almost every second episode ;)

So in a TOS mod you could implement a whole bunch of new monsters :mrgreen:

You could also replace the edo guardian with this nice k7 station I've seen here lately


the mirror universe idea of Dr_Breen is very interesting, too. actually I had a similiar idea but it plays in the future where the feds are just able to win with the help they get from the mirror universe...

So for me this one sounds damn awesome... but it may be a bit hard to explain it... (2 Sol Systems on a single map and stuff)... a bit confusing and I dunno how to solve it that it may sound at least a bit logical... ^^

Just some ideas that come to mind:

Despite the fact that it's currently impossible to get around the limits of BotF's number of playabe races, the ones not chosen to be playable could still appear with at least one buildable ship when you get them to join you.
So even though one might not ge to play the Lyrans or Hydrans or Kzinti, a ship from their side would still be fun.
This would also give you a few more choices of minor (non-canon) races.

Possible monsters that come to mind:
Doomsday Machine, Nomad, Amoeba, Fesarius (maybe as Gomtuu so you can befriend it) or even if the Terran Empire does not bcome a playable race (personally I'd prefer the Tholians and Gorn) a mirror-universe ship could also serve as a monster.

*EDIT*

I don't want to spam my ideas, so for the moment I'd like to add the ideas that I have right now to this post.

I'd like to suggest switching the Constellation and the Centaur based on the fact that the Centaur is a lot smaller than the Constellation.
In addition the Constellation might have the BotF-familiar place of Heavy Destroyer turing the TNG time, but during TMP it's a pretty large cruiser.

The Burke from SFB might also be an alternative choice for a TL1 scout.

A few other, admittedly rather outlandish ideas:

It might be interesting if some of the races might not employ the familiar cruiser/strike cruiser model we know from BotF.
For example, assuming they make it into the MOD, the Gorn might use their (light) cruisers for bombardment.
This idea is based on the SFB/SFC Gorn Light Cruiser which has the same heavy armament as the Heavy Cruiser but only half the beams.
This would also make the Gorn different in the way they operate because they'd have to rely more on their destroyers to cover their (light) cruisers than other races.
Instead of a striker they migh have a different specialty ship like the SFB-style Fast Cruiser instead (reduced heavy weapons compared to their heavy cruiser but greater speed on the strategic map).

We had started on something here but I was very sad when it seemed to fade out due to various reasons.

Mr D did some great stuff as he mentioned and if needed im sure we might be able to pull out some stuff with a few calls and assist if you like.

Sev did send me a PM in Sept 10 asking if we wanted to get the ball rolling again on this one and I said yes and then unfortunatly heard nothing more. But what time I have spare and input is there if you want?!!

Romulans...ships or other stuff?

There would be quite a lot of ships options for them, I've got a prototype for a TOS-era Garuda/Centurion from Starfleet Academy/Klingon Academy and if there's something to be said about TOS era dreadnoughts, the SFB Condor is one scary piece of ship.
