I asked myself this question as I recently seen "Concerning Flight" (VOY).

So I thought why not asking it here and see what you gals and guys can come up with?

However, the Internets is a good source for any information about this topic.
And I won't blame you if you use it as your "extended memory" like you do with many other questions day by day. This question is not about "how good do I actually know Star Trek".

The best attempt to compare kilobytes with kiloquads was made here imo. Despite the fact it's #1 in google search I like how he included Moore's Law into his "equation".

Well you could argue about this topic of how Moore's law will become obsolete with quantum computers, etc but then you'll never get even a far approximation. And as I somehow would like to have some answer to this question I'd suggest not to be too scientific about it. Or we won't get one

p.s.: another good episode to watch is "Measure of a Man" (TNG) there they tell how fast Data is. So I think (not sure) we have all 3 episodes with references of the computer speed.

that was a very intresting link. however moore's law can't last forever. i mean 2^100 is an extraordinary high number. according to wikipedia the total amount of molecules in the universe is 6*10^79. so with this amount of storage capacity you could in fact store a complete image of the universe and calculate it's behavior as you have far enough storage space to store the exact location and direction of every molecule in the universe.

what you did is a "bit" like comparing apples and oranges.

So is a book just physical or is there more to it then what you just can pick up and flip open?

I find this wikipedia articles somehow funny. Just a random question. Do you believe anything which can be edited by anyone @ anytime?

I know lots of this funny people who want to prove something and the only thing they can come up with is a wikipedia article

Don't takes this personally. It's just a common observation of mine in general.

there's other sources that prove 6*10^79 is fairly correct. of course you still have measure misstakes as this is just a general estimate made by some scientists.

so i rest my case and say that guy's calculations are intresting but impossible.

Well... a starfleet facility does. DS9 used the Bajoran day, which if I recall correctly was 26 hrs a day.

2^100 = 1,267,650,600,228,229,401,496,703,205,376 or ~ 12 * 10^29

that's not even vaguely close to 6*10^79.

iirc, they mentioned the arithmetic operations in these episodes. so it should be very easy to compare it to actual pc's
