UDM 3 crash on greent stars
Greetings everyone!
first: thanks for your work on this site. It is a great thing to see that this game is not forgotten. It is worth to replay it after today i noticed that "Endless Space 2012" lacks something I remember I had plenty of it in botf... depth!
Now back into botf i wanted to check some mods. Found one or two interesting, done the downloads that were the obligationary kind.
Game runs ok in vanilla mode with " Birth of the Federation (full game) Multi installer Must have for new mods" I have installed as it sounded the most wise decision.
Now i downloaded UDM and it starts fine untill I click on a GREEN star on the map. Gives me a
DevCreateSurface: Failed to create a font buffer. EC: 80007...
Error: 593 C:\mpr\ddk\eng\esurface.c Oct 8 1999
I redownloaded the mod and reinstalled, testet large map and standard map size. Both crah as soon as I click on a green star on the map.
Anybody a hint or advise, please?
wish you all a nice christmas time
Jabu

Hi Jabu,
what OS are you using?
did you install 1024?
what 3D setting did you install using "SOFTWARE" or "DIRECT3D" ?
to check open stbof.ini in UDM folder and look at 3D=? change setting to opposite to test.
since this is an MPR error not a BOTF error this sounds like a display/video error.

Win7 64
1024? uhmmmm i think i did nothing special than downloading the two files and keeped all on default. So it is C:\botf is default and all mods getting into subdirectories.
on 3d settings I think I picked the hades direct 3d settings since that sound most practical.
3D is set to direct3d
And now I changed that to "software" and it is fixed. Look and feel is more stable now but I assume now big battles might become slow in late game?
Strange how it only seems to have affected green stars...
Thanks for your help thunderchero! This really gets me ready to start playing!
I will check if I will do my first steps in this mod with the given settings.
Now a small sidequestion arises: Do "5 Advanced" settings and "impossible" is the usual way to play this mod?
As I wish to get sucked into a long evolving game I am looking for a big map with slow expansion of forces with an epic feeling not knowing "i will win this game for sure."
I have noticed that "balanced mod" and "Prime directive mod" seems to aim to that direction.
But the dominion story and since i never ever really seen the ferengie as a strong player i hope for more tense hours after get in touch with a wormhole

Re: UDM 3 crash on greent stars
this would have no effect on speed in combat. But I do suggest keeping other races fleets low as possible or turn process time increases as game progresses (this has nothing to do with 3D setting)Jabu wrote:but I assume now big battles might become slow in late game?

sorry no working wormholes in this mod, but once you meet dominion they can be tough, but this goes for all races.

Re: UDM 3 crash on greent stars
This would depend on your playing style,Jabu wrote:Now a small side question arises: Do "5 Advanced" settings and "impossible" is the usual way to play this mod?
For Multi player games, they like playing the "epic games" large maps, low tech starts on impossible.
for single player games I have heard of very long games this way too.
Also to add a little twist you can turn on random events and change stbof.ini for borg=ON, but this can ruin a game if borg takes out AI races before you meet.
As for 1024, this is experimental and some (most ) video cards/drivers will have random crashes.

Re: UDM 3 crash on greent stars
I planned to play it single player for next afternoons. If I play a game alone I like to have a long fun game. That was how I remember my first botf games were. And I remember a very thrilling ultimate borg cube interception at sol and other cool events who keeped heartbeat high
Multiplayer needs to have more options available on first rounds. I can imagine how early start options might slow down the game botf mp.
I could like to play a mp match but might suck badly compared to mp-veterans.
... the more I think about ... could be fun to play udm in mp. Is that possible if the mod files are same as hosts files?
How long is a game session ~ ?
Anyway, thanks for the right hint. Consider the initial threadpurpose as solved
ps: getting to 1024 res (if i am not already) will not be a big step to solve.

Re: UDM 3 crash on greent stars
I'm having a similar issue. I'm running the latest UDM 3 ddb and whenever I click on a sector with a red star (both small and large) I get a crash to desktop. I'm running Windows 8.1 x64 and have checked stbof.ini and 3D=SOFTWARE. This issue does not produce any error message or a crash log.

Re: UDM 3 crash on greent stars
if you start a new game do you still have same issue?
if not, it sounds like a corrupt saved game.

Re: UDM 3 crash on greent stars
Yes, it doesn't matter what empire I play either. Any new game for me causes the crash the moment I click any red giant or flare star sector.

Re: UDM 3 crash on greent stars
from your other post I am guessing this is heavily edited? but it sounds like you are missing an animation file for that star types or it is placing too many planets in that system.
but suggest reinstall with latest release, but you would lose any changes you have made

Re: UDM 3 crash on greent stars
I've followed the procedure to add the Dominion Wars map mod into the large galaxy version, however this issue also happens when I load the regular sized game as well, which I haven't edited in any way. Seeing how they have their own separate mod folders just like any other full mod install, edits to the large version shouldn't affect the regular version, right?
In regards to placing too many planets, this issue is happening in every sector with a flare star and every sector with a red giant. To make sure, I have uninstalled UDM 3, redownload the UDM 3 ddb installer from the downloads page, and I get the same issue on a fresh install as well.

Re: UDM 3 crash on greent stars
so I was correct, it is a corrupt saved game. those saved game had errors from day 1Peelster1 wrote:I've followed the procedure to add the Dominion Wars map mod into the large galaxy version
Dominion Wars maps are 7 years old and no longer compatible with current version on UDM 3 and are no longer supported.
sorry
Re: UDM 3 crash on greent stars
No, it's not a corrupt saved game. Like I said, even with a fresh install with a new game the game crashes when I click on a red flare or a red giant. Other than that, the large version saves for Dominion Wars actually seem to work just fine other than the Dominion save file doesn't load at all.

Re: UDM 3 crash on greent stars
wrong, the trek.exe calls the registry to locate files. and this scenario has 2 installs using the same registry, this will allow conflicts like this.Peelster1 wrote:Seeing how they have their own separate mod folders just like any other full mod install, edits to the large version shouldn't affect the regular version, right?
Re: UDM 3 crash on greent stars
What about with two separate trek.exe? Dominion Wars required to manually replace the one in the UDML folder. Regardless, on a fresh install with no edits at all, (I even tried not installing the large galaxy version.) the crash still happens. I'm fairly certain it has something to do with the star files themselves. I get this same exact issue in any other mod that uses those stars, (for example the Ferengi-Dominion Alliance mod). At first I thought that somehow the files for those two stars might be missing, but when I opened up UE, they were right there looking as normal as all of the other stars. I might be able to fix this by replacing the star files, but I'd like to avoid that if possible.
