Forum Pulse: Most Preferred/Favorite Faction To Play
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The idea behind the "Forum Pulse" series is to get a better understanding of those that make up this community.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Topic: Most Preferred/Favorite Faction To Play? That doesn't mean you don't play other factions, just what is your most played/preferred, at least at this moment as it may have changed in the past. If you want to explain your choice by all means go for it!
Lead Off: Federation hands down for me. As for the rest, in my preferred order: Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, and Ferengi. I know there is also the Borg and Dominion.

Re: Forum Pulse: Most Preferred/Favorite Faction To Play
I'd love to play the Borg
well, I had in mind to eventually do an extension for it some time with a new slaughter or deathmatch mode
I mean current borg mode is crap
would have been some real good fun
beside this I think I like Romulans best

Klings, hands down.
- I usually end up in an all-out war with anyone anyways
- need more moral? Just declare war to those 5 minors you just met. Don't bribe them like some Ferengi bitch and use your credits for your own economy/fleets
- cloak your ships and kill the monsters savely
- the music in combination witht the GUI create that nice klingon atmosphere which I find pretty immersive
- since you're killing everything and everyone, there's not much lag in games
- micromanagement is a huge challenge and it's great to beat the feds and fergs later on in economy and science
- conquer everything and become an expert on that matter

Re: Forum Pulse: Most Preferred/Favorite Faction To Play
Romulans. Cloaking devices and nebulae. Nuff said.
Re: Forum Pulse: Most Preferred/Favorite Faction To Play
With the proviso that I genuinely enjoy playing all five factions, the Romulans have long been my favorite. They're the most "middle of the road" faction, and are the most adaptable to any given particular strategy. (Also, their ships look damn cool. ) If that also means the Star Empire has the problem of being a "jack of all trades, and master of none", well that's just part of the fun for me.
Behind them, the Federation is a fairly close second. Their strengths of research, diplomacy, and economy fit my play style pretty well, especially in the early & mid game. (They're not so great later on, when everyone is at war, but again, I enjoy the challenge.) And like the Romulans, their ship aesthetics appeal to me -- it's that "Starfleet clean" look.
The Klingons are third place on my list, despite their strengths not meshing with my play style very well (I'm generally a turtler, not a conqueror). This is partly because -- to continue the theme -- I like their ships. Another part of it is that I love their bombastic style; their voice-overs for everything from combat to first-contact encounters just give one a great sense of, "We are warriors, and f*** you if you don't like that!" Finally, the Klingons are one of the classic Trek races, and were (until TNG, at least) one of the "Big Three" powers in the Alpha Quadrant -- when I play as the Feds, Romulans, or Klingons, I feel like I'm paying homage to not only the show, but to the culture it helped foster as well.
Fourth on my list is the Ferengi. Although their gameplay strengths fit my play style fairly well (when you're a turtler, money makes the world go 'round!), they're not my favorite for three reasons: First, because I generally don't care for how their ships look -- not so much that they're unattractive, but they all look so similar to me. Second, because the voice actors did a little too good a job of sounding like your typically annoying Ferengi; their voice-overs are like nails on a chalkboard for me sometimes! Finally, they're simply too easy -- I nearly always bump up the difficulty when playing as the Alliance, as otherwise it's virtually no challenge at all. (On the other hand, they *are* fun to play with when I'm in a silly/puckish mood, and/or feel like a "Monty Haul" campaign...)
The Cardassians, sadly, are last on my list. While I find them utterly fascinating as a people within the Star Trek universe (only the Klingons and Vulcans get more love from me), I find they just don't fit my play style very well in BOTF. The combination of being both conquest- *and* intel-oriented just isn't my thing. (When I play as the Cards, it's because I want a challenge.) Also, I personally find Union ships to be the absolute butt-ugliest ones in the game, at least among the major powers. (Not the greatest reason, I know, but there it is anyway.)

@Flocke, so when is the new Borg arriving? ;-)
@QuasarDonkey, tIqIpqu' 'ej nom tIqIp!
@KrazeeXXL, I agree when playing the Klingons just attack and declare war. You take a morale hit if you make peace treaties anyway. I agree the GUI with music, and voice overs, makes for an awesome Klingon experience.
@Tethys, being able to cloak almost every ship is a huge advantage to the Romulans.
@Martok, due to a previous discussion I knew your favorite faction. ;-)
I agree that all factions are enjoyable with their various strengths and weaknesses.
The Federation's biggest weakness IMO is their total dislike for assaults. I started a thread for that in the strategy area. I am playing a long term game where currently I have 64 systems, over 300,000 credits (like 5,800 per turn), and so many starships it is slowing the game down when scrolling. The Klingons are gone. I just sat and watched the Romulans steam roll over them. Then I steam rolled over the Romulans and they are now gone. The problem is finishing off the Ferengi (I am allied to the Cards). I have the military power with dozens and dozens and dozens of starships to their like two or three left. But when I assault the remain systems here comes the riots and boom morale falls like a rock. I am just going to have to click yes next time I get offered all governments, that matter, recognize your dominance. However I really wanted to finish off the Ferengi myself. :-( Morale management is the biggest pain for the Federation IMO, but it does add to the challenge.
I, too, agree the Cards have the ugliest ships of all the races. The Ferengi's aren't much better. I do like that the Ferengi can more easily trade with other powers. That is a huge advantage because while the military is key it is the economy that builds, drives, and supports that military. The voice overs fits the Ferengi well and adds to the experience. The Ferengi interface is "different". ;-)
I, also, agree that the Klingons are very cool because of the lore from Star Trek. It is fun to take command of their empire.

Feds come in 2nd for me. Prolly played them the most, tho.cleverwise wrote:The Federation's biggest weakness IMO is their total dislike for assaults. I started a thread for that in the strategy area. While it's tempting to colonize everything within reach @ the beginning, it spreads up ressources too much. In MP it makes you vunerable as hell, too. You also need those systems later on to counter moral downers like bombardements or war declarations with colonizitations. With all the memberships and treaties the feds always have high moral. It often sux when the moral falls and screws up the micro. Colonizations are a great way to counter that. You just have to be careful that the AI won't try to colonize your systems. This can be really really annoying.
This is the main reason why I don't like the "removed borders @friendship treaties - patch". They just can come in and colonize and you can't do anything against it. At least with the treaty and borders you can block them. And when they break the treaty, blow their ships up ;D
There are other ways to get moral back. My fav is to usually don't kill any enemy ships in a fleet and let some escape. Just to defeat them another time
That's secures a steady moral income A bit of an exploit but sometimes necessary.
@Martok:
great description. Yea, the Roms are definitely the middle way here. Although I find their ships to be very weak. But that's neglectable when it comes to sheer numbers. Ever played against Flocke? Then you know what I mean
The ferg voice-overs are great. I never really played them but when I did I laughed so hard. The GUI is really ugly imo but fits perfectly. The devs did a really good job to catch the specifics of any race within the GUI imo. I love that.
Cards are probably my least fav race, too. Their ships are strong but slow... I'm not much of an intel fan, myself. But I really like to smash 'em in SP and would miss them. They always annoy me for some reason.
You know what guys. You got me... I'm gonna fire up BotF again

I have never had a race colonize one of my systems in contested or my own territory that I can remember while playing with the No Borders patch. I will have to try and see if player colonization is possible with a treaty.KrazeeXXL wrote:This is the main reason why I don't like the "removed borders @friendship treaties - patch". Well, I didn't mean my own territory. Due to map generation it's often kind of a rag rug and not claimed or contested but somewhat within your empire or its grasp. W/o borders and a way to block it, AI just flies next to Sol, to that little gap which isn't covered by your territory and colonizes a useless system. Which I have to remove ofc
Before all-alone Starbases, an Outpost was great to prevent that kind of annoyance. Now we mainly just have SBs left. They take a long time to build, and have huge maintenance costs as well. Which just leaves ships for tactical positioning, shipyards and those expensive SBs for expansion which renders quick map control pretty much useless.

Re: Forum Pulse: Most Preferred/Favorite Faction To Play
It does greatly help to establish treaties so your borders are recognized. This does give one time to colonize systems that are of less value later. I will often leap to a further system just so I can "trap"/put other systems in my space.
As mentioned I did start another thread on how to counter balance the negative effects of system assaults. One of the best things to do is liberate a system. Fed citizens really respond to that action and its worth several assaults. What has happened is I liberate a system and then offer them membership and the system takes another membership from a different power. Grrrrr... Oh well that is part of the game; sniping systems. :-)

Works good with agressive majors as neighbourscleverwise wrote: As mentioned I did start another thread on how to counter balance the negative effects of system assaults. One of the best things to do is liberate a system. Fed citizens really respond to that action and its worth several assaults.

omg, don't remind me. This is so annoying. Always good to give them some credits. And don't attack their friends/allies. If you can stay friendly with that major, you have a good chance to actually woo that minor away from them after all.
You know what'd be great? If you could agree to transfer star systems or ships to another race as part of a treaty. Example would be the DMZ where Feds and Cards exchanged some systems.
You could also use that in mp to make a gift to a friendly player. I have no clue how this could be implemented but I like the idea. Could work like intel/sabotage @ships.
no, too busy atm. BotF is one of my most-played games and I may have "overplayed" it in the past years. I just can take little doses of it. It becomes boring pretty fast for me nowadays -.-cleverwise wrote:What's this? BotF isn't already being fired up? 8-{KrazeeXXL wrote:You know what guys. You got me... I'm gonna fire up BotF again

I have had friendly powers do it too. I even receive the your empire's popularity has increased among our people message. Of course it doesn't always happen but it does some times. I am quick to offer membership often immediately after they are liberated. I always throw in money too. Oh well part of the game.KrazeeXXL wrote: omg, don't remind me. This is so annoying. That would be awesome! I have thought about that before. Why can't you offer a system? Perhaps not a minor as they have to agree to join and can be stolen if you are at war. But especially just colonized systems. You can gift disputed space.KrazeeXXL wrote: You know what'd be great? If you could agree to transfer star systems or ships to another race as part of a treaty. Overplayed? Is that possible? Hmmm... ;-) I hear you. BotF can be repetitive. I go through on and off phases too.KrazeeXXL wrote: no, too busy atm. Re: Forum Pulse: Most Preferred/Favorite Faction To Play
The Cards are my favourite! Love their superior intel abilities. Granted they're probably the most difficult of the 5 races. But I like a challenge.
Re: Forum Pulse: Most Preferred/Favorite Faction To Play
It all depends on how I want to play and how much time I have for playing (barely get time to do more than a handful of turns so I've not played in a while)
Generally though, I like to start early, slowly expend and then sit back and watch the fireworks kick off, so I'm often playing Romulan these days as they're tailor made for this kind of play. Little more satisfying than finally meeting your foes and knowing that though you've got a big enough fleet to conquer or defend yourself, you've also got enough intel force to sit back and rip them apart from the inside out. I find it hilarious seeing a huge blob of something that isn't green on the map slowly wink out system by system through poor morale
That said, if I run into the Cardies early on, I'll quickly knock them out as i get tired with seeing eighty thousand espionage notifications from them. I rarely play as the Cardassians because if I play them like the AI does I have the whole galaxy against me in no time at all.
