Is the BOTF game style a legacy of a bygone era?

What I mean is, you look at TBS space based games these days, Stellaris, Endless Space, MoO16, etc... They all have abandoned the traditional "tile map" state of play. In fact the only TBS game I can think of these days that still uses it is Civ 5, but even it's successor is abandoning that for a more "fluid" game map. Is the "Grid of tiles" type play a relic of an era we've moved on from?

I would say in many ways yes. Software and computers have obviously gotten a lot more powerful. This allows for more interesting random "maps" which often are just open spaces.

However some games like the Total War Series still use a more locked in map due to the nature of the games. Also the title Horizon uses a tiled like map and has a lot of options I would like to see in a BotF 2.0.
