How do you know if your any good or not??

You have fun and win at least in the end.

What sort of criteria count?

Your military/ships are what count overall. However in order to field a big fleet you need all the support of production, population, research, and intelligence (even if it is just for defense).

Does any race have an advantage?

Federation has the ability to more easily woo minors. However Romulans have cloaking and thus can more easily run away when needed, however their ships are fairly weak. For learning the Romulans can often be easier since well what I said you can often just run away from battle - cowards. ;-)

How does mutiplayer work??

Never played MP so not qualified to answer.

Cardassians have means of subjugating races, Ferengi can make trade routes without treaties and have money making and morale enhancing structures.
Klingons generally have slightly stronger ships and like war. You don't have morale penalties for planetary bombardment. Some Klingon ships have cloaks.
