I heard they initially tried to make Patrick Stewart wear a wig for Captain Picard, but never seen the test photo til now.

I read this article a couple of days ago. It's about Piccard who influenced Gene Roddenberry for the character of Picard:

Somehow, the resemblance is uncanny. (although it's not himself, his grandfather's twin brother inspired Gene)

If I am not mistaken, this image is from the makeup department after preparing Stewart for the episode where he and Dr. Crusher are viewing Jack's body in a flashback.
