Problem with loading saved games - INVALID

First of all I want to say that I absolutely love this game. However, I am having an issue with loading saved games. I'm not sure if it's to do with empire size or fleet size but it gets to a point when my saved games wont load. when I click on the file the screen looks like its loading but after about 10-15 seconds it returns to the main menu which is very disappointing. I have had a look through the forum but couldn't find anyone who had the same problem. Please can you help?

I think I have solved the problem. I found out that I had downloaded a really old version of the game (from 2009) so please can you delete this request for help? Many thanks.
