New laptop/Win 11 issues

Post by Scottymac »

Got a new laptop with Windows 11 and as far as I know I have the prerequisites to run the game. Downloaded and installed Supremacy with music/borg/patch. However, when I start the game I get an unhandled exception error and the game closes. I have attached the error log in the hope someone can help out. Cheers in advance.

Hi Scottymac.
Other people playing on Win11 have had no issues. It seems to be related to conflicting assemblies.
Is there anything in your machine that might be causing this? Some project you're working on, or something?

Hi Iceman
Thanks for the reply. Not working on any projects. New laptop with default software/settings. Am currently exploring turning on/off .Net features at the moment, as I appear to have 2 versions installed. I will keep you posted. Got to get this fixed as I am starting to experience Supremacy withdrawal symptoms :)

Ignore previous posts. Turned out is was an incomplete Supremacy download. Just redownloaded installed and I am off and running. Happy days.

Hi Folks

New laptop (again) as last one stolen. Having issues around graphics. Attached error log. When clicking on ship building icon I periodically get unhandled exception error then the game crashes. Suspect it is to do with my Intel chip/Nvidia graphics card combo.

Win 11 64 bit, 12th gen Intel i7 chip, Intel Iris(R) Xe graphics (DirectX 12 Utimate is disabled as per dxdiag), Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop CPU.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Scottymac, nice to see you again!
This is an issue with XNA. Not sure what causes it. Does it happen for every ship you try to build?
As a last resort, you can just rename the Models folder (to _Models or something), but that's not really an acceptable solution.
Does the game display the stars correctly in the star system panel? If so, it might be some of the ship models that are causing the crash.

Hi Iceman

Thanks for the quick reply! Renamed folder and got e few rounds before error happened again. Log attached. Log looks different this time.

The error happens before I select a ship model to build.

As far as I can see planets look ok.

You gfx card doesn't seem to like XNA... Have you tried updating the drivers?
Tha laptop seems to have some issues with the RTX 3050. Try this.

All drivers are up to date. Tried forcing the game to use specific graphic devices but eventually get same error with each.

I apologize for asking this, but are you sure you have XNA v3.1 installed? Not v4.0, you need v3.1.
Have you tried searching this forum for a similar issue?
I'll get back to this tomorrow, it's late now.

No need to apologise. I do indeed have XNA 3.1 installed. Even did a reinstall just in case the issue was there.

Time zones are not conducive to quick dialogue in a forum such as this. I'm down in New Zealand.

I have looked around wonder if the issue is related to the chipset not supporting DiectX 12 Ultimate???

The joys of some laptops I guess :)

Yeah, we're on opposite sides of the world (I'm in Portugal).
So, been doing some digging, and found some similar issues:

viewtopic.php?p=57243&hilit=xna+crash+supremacy#p57243
Reinstalling clean intel gfx drivers did not help.
Then I started to uninstall all remotely GPU-related programs. After I had removed Riva Tuner, the game did not crash anymore! However, the planet animations are still not right.

Can you try some of these potential fixes and report back please?
Hopefully we'll get it sorted out.

This sounds like prev laptop issue, seems you will have to find a software for your laptop(go to its page, search by laptop serial number), your hardware, thinks, there is no need to use gpu, instead its forcing gpu on cpu instead of nVidia.

Aside his issue, I'll like to contribute

Dragging mouse on galaxy map is really sluggish(like its trying to refresh every time i stop), only if i manage to keep constant "motion" of mouse moving(in any direction) will that movement be "fluid".

When ESC from galaxy map to main menu, it seems sector stays "selected" and game wont focus main menu(grayed save button issue), if used right click to enter main menu, it will open it properly. Then on save click, where save name should be used, all buttons are grayed(again ^^), seems to react when right click is pressed on that "new" window, buttons become available(sometimes it wont, and sometimes slapping TAB and arrow keys helps(windows function to switch between things)).

Also there is missing icon.

Hi Iceman
Have gone thru all these potential fixes.
Have reinstalled graphics drivers direct from laptop manufacturers site rather than Intel/NVidia. Game works for a while and I can click on build ship icon and select models but it eventually crashes when I click on build ship icon, not when selecting ship model.
Have uninstalled all Nvidia add on apps but still crashes.
Have forced earlier versions of DirectX via dxcpl.exe but still crashes.
I note I have MS .Net sdk 7.0.203 not 4.5.1 could this be an issue?
Cheers

Edit - I also have MS ASP.net core 7.014 installed as well
