fullscreen with black filler. i installed bothe the multi installer and UDM both in safe mode. thought back to you saying it seemed like an access issue. seemed to fix the problem.

that is a video driver issue. some will stretch images to full screen and some will keep aspect ratio with black background.

you might look in video setting in NVidia/ATI control panel to see if "keep aspect ratio" is set

F8 only works on mpr++

Hi folks, long time fan of BotF amongst other older games (Alpha Centauri, StarCraft, Lords of the Realm II; all of which currently run on my system) I'm having some troubles getting botf to run on a Win7 VM on a MacBook Pro. Any thoughts/assistance/suggestions would be wonderful

What I've tried so far:
--Installation from copy of original disc (disc is known good/working; was used on x61 that was sold 2 years ago and placed in CD case for storage)

--Installation from the multi installer

--Attempted editing the .ini file to turn off audio, movies, "3D=" has been toggled between both software and D3D settings

--Running trek.exe in 98/ME, 2000, XP SP2, XP SP3

--Empty crash.log as the program hasn't even gotten as far as the main menu

**Note: HAVE NOT attempted installation of any mods nor of MPR++ as I read in earlier posts it was in alpha. Assumed MPR++ might not have any effect but I've tried everything I could think of thus far...

Event Log Data (chronological progression)
--A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (trek.exe)
--The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application
--The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because WDDM is not in use

That last one about WDDM not being in use is what confuses the heck out of me... My understanding is that WDDM is the default driver

Machine Specs (machine is a little over 2 years old now):
--MacBook Pro 13", Late 2011
2.4GHz Core i5, 4 GB RAM installed
Intel HD Graphics 3000 (384 MB memory)
OS X (v10.9.4)

Hi Guys!

One of my all time favourite games... this and Rome Total War!

So happy to find this forum... but I'm having one big problem!

Once I install the game itand run it in the right compatibility mode it plays fine... but if I turn it off and try to turn it on again I get the blue screen of death!

Can anyone help me out?

Standard Windows 7, regular graphics card, 32 bit nothing fancy!!!

thanks,

Adrian

Hi flannelsalmon,

sorry I have no experience with OS X, you might try DxWnd

Hi Hadrian75,

first question how did you install game?

I have never heard of this game/compatibility settings causing BSD does game even try to load before BSD?

Hi Thunderchero..

Thanks for the quick reply! Installed it as normal, regular game first then the mod after... ran it but it wouldnt work properly without using XP compatibility settings... then after I play it and turn it off, when I try to rerun it I get the blue screen of death. Tried it without the Mods, tried to run as Admin, tried dif compat. settings.. same result each time! Even installed to a different directory... same thing!
First Install: plays fine!

Second time I run the game BSD... doesnt load, goes straight to BSD.

Is no one else having this trouble? I'm using a MEDION AKOYA 19" laptop with a poor video card that wont even display aero... ???

no one has posted such a problem.

next open stbof.ini and turn "OFF" movies and sound and check what 3D is set to. if other than "SOFTWARE" change to SOFTWARE.

also check to make sure your video driver is up to date from video manufacture not "windows updates" windows update loads generic drivers.

Hi Thunderchero,

Apologies for the late reply. I was down the west of Ireland at a wedding lol

I followed all the steps but still getting the same result.. The only thing I've yet to do is reinstall Java... maybe that'll help me!

Fingers crossed! :)

Hi new to the board and looking for some help.

I've installed BOTF from the CD and it works generally well but with the occasional crash but when ever I try to patch or mod the game I get nothing. The game wont load I get a few seconds of indication that it going to load then nothing happens.

Any advice I could get would be appreciated.

Cheers

It is great you still have original CD, but on modern systems you should use multi installer. here is suggestions from first post

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Summary of Solutions
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Use Multi installer (this has all patches part of installer)

install using "software" mode (direct3d has been problematic)

right click trek.exe and run as administrator to allow saving of games.

Some members have also reported if set the compatibility for "Windows 98/Windows ME" it will help.

turning off morphological filtering and crossfire.

Thanks for the quick reply.

The reason I ended up using the CD version was because when ever I use the Multi Installer and try to launch the game (regardless of compatability settings) I get the same message of trek.exe stopped working. There is no information in the crash log.

Tried installing it as both vanilla and 3D but no luck.

Although I have no idea how to turn of morphological filtering and crossfire.

all newer mods require multi installer.

did you close any command prompts during install or get any messages. these command prompts can take several minutes to run.

some members have reported programs like avast preventing proper install of multi installer.

as for morphological filtering and crossfire, I doubt if this is a problem for you from your first post.

I didn't close anything just let them run.

Tried to install again with avast switched off but its made no difference. Starts to load screen goes black then comes back to windows with the error message.

I've tried running it through all compatibility modes with the other options on/off but makes no difference I get the same message every time.

The game does work from a fresh CD install but that limits me to vanilla game, resolution etc
