Use Multi installer (this has all patches part of installer)

install using "software" mode (direct3d has been problematic)

right click trek.exe and run as administrator to allow saving of games.

Some members have also reported if set the compatibility for "Windows 98/Windows ME" it will help.

turning off morphological filtering and crossfire.

video driver/software note
you might need to setup a profile within your video settings for each install of botf (Nvidia contol panel or Catalyst Control Center), BOTF needs lower settings than default in some cases.

Works fine for me, I have it installed on Win7 Pro 32 bit, should work for Home and Ultimate versions as well.. not sure about 64 bit, but I've heard it works on those too :)

Good luck

PS: This was using the Multi Installer here on the site, unsure if the CD version will work (but i suppose it should?)

Try it out and see. I have Windows 7 and have no problems. Thing is it was installed when I had Vista so I can't say 100% it will install under Windows 7. I have no problems playing under Windows 7.

I'm testing out win 7 64 since 2 weeks...

so far so bad

;)

had no time to check out BotF on it so far but will catch it up next week and will post my results here, too.

p.s.: I'm afraid how things will work out on my brand new 24" screen ;)

even 1024x768 (I was used to in the last couple of years) is a pain to watch at - imagine 800x600...

I just had to reinstall BotF. I am on Windows 7 64 bit, no problems installing or playing so far. But I am using AAM right now, just reinstalled to see if I can play multiplayer.

QUESTION: Does BoTF work on Windows 7?

ANSWER: YES. I have Windows 7, and have been happily playing BoTF for about two months now. Here's how it works:

1. Install BoTF (probably from .iso is your best bet)
2. If you run it the way it is, it will freeze and crash, due to Windows 7 not being able to automatically dumb itself down to those levels
3. Enter compatibility mode... to enter compatibility mode on Windows 7:
3a. Right Click on the icon I am sure you have placed on the desktop, and click "Properties"
3b. Click the "compatibility" tab
3c. check the "run in compatibility mode" check box
3d. set the compatibility for "Windows 98/Windows ME"
3e. in the settings area, turn the following things on:
- Run in 256 colours
- Run in 640 x 480
- Disable Visual Themes
- Disable display scaling on high DPI settings
4. Click "Apply"
5. Run trek.exe (that is the icon you have just edited)
6. Have fun playing BoTF
7. Yes, it also works with mods

I posted this on the Star Trek Supremacy site first, then got lazy and simply copied it. I hope this helps anyone running Windows 7 64-bit with BoTF. However, it looks like most people have already solved most of their problems in Windows 7, so this will just be here for reference :P.

Ermm, Andzzy, that sounds like a horrible solution.

There is an easier way:
1.) Install the BOTF Mutli-Installer
2.) Chose the correct videosettings during the installation
3.) Start it up

That should do it.

@Mentat: Oh, well, it works well for me. I wasn't familiar with the Multi-Installer when I installed BoTF, so my post is simply a reference for those who aren't familiar with it. But yes, I suppose the multi-installer option is easier :). That's also why I pointed out that my solution is really only for reference.

And to be save, do not install it to the program files folders if it asks for that. I always do C:\botf and if 2 hard drives d:\botf.

Hi Thetys and all users,

after getting Birth up and running in MP with the help of this Forum I wanted to bring more people in on my Notebook with Windows 7, also using the tips from this thread. All of them, I think.

I have Windows 7 32 bit and Birth and the mods are running...of a sort. From turn 1 on its extremely sluggish, and I mean extremely, and it crashes within the first 10 turns, 20 if lucky.

Did anyone have the same problems with Windows 7 and have some suggestions, please?

Thanks!

When you installed the game, what graphic settings did you take? Did you take the better ones?

I had this problem as well and I was told to unintstall the game and reinstall it with all the basic defaults, (expcet of install path). So when you are asked what graphic settings you want, do not choose hades 2.0 or what ever the other 2 names are.

Good luck and hope this works.

It's worth a shot, shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to do. I can't guarntee it will work, but your problems sounded like mine, and they went away after I did that.

If that dosn't work be patient, I guess it being so close to summer for us north of the equator, lots of people are away and not frequenting BotF forums, but they will help when they come back.
