Depending on system this wine-dx-patch takes a long time to load, you just need to wait some longerdowneaster59 wrote:When I added the three files from this thread to my botf folder, I get the little "Trek.exe has stopped working" window, with the icon on the taskbar. If I do alt-tab, or click my mouse, I get a black screen and then a white one, but no game. Am I missing something?

win8 64bit + UDMIII 3.01
I recently got this new laptop. I came here & found the wine files which fixed the standard game (from multi installer) but after I installed UDM,The standard game still runs fine but the cursor lags when I run the mod. I'm sure it's a simple fix , but I'm by far no expert, so could someone please let me know how to make this work?

you must install the wine file to each install path.

Re: Windows 8 COMPLETE FIX - Vanilla Game
Ok, so I've been playing UDMIII with the mpr++ engine on my Surface pro 2 w/ win 8.1 without a hitch.
Here's what I do:
1) Install Vanilla Multi-Mod
2) Install UDMIIIdc
3) Install UDMIII 1024x768 patch*
4) Install MPR with UDM files
5) Right-click desktop shortcut to UDM --> Select Compatibility Tab --> Select run this program in compatibility mode and choose Win98/ME --> Check "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" and "Run this Program as Administrator" for good measure.
*This may or may not be needed, but why mess with something that's working?
It runs rock solid, no cursor lag or long loads.
edit: of course all the magic may be in mpr...

Re: Windows 8 COMPLETE FIX - Vanilla Game
Thanks, again!
#3 Is more superstition, wouldn't want to upset the delicate balance.
#5 In my case was necessary to make it playable. Constant lockups without it (like before I could even get past turn 1). The Surface DPI scales to 150% default, so that may be it, but I haven't narrowed it down because trying all those settings was just a final "Hail Mary" maneuver -- shockingly, it worked.

Re: win8 64bit + UDMIII 3.01
hey i got win8 with 64 bit all i needed was the multi installer patch and BOOM star trek botf was working
Re: Windows 8 problems/solutions please post them here
I'm having problems after updating to Win 8.1. It had been running fine with the stock game and UDM prior to updating. I've used the other fixes in this thread to get it working correctly with Win 8. Now the game crashes within minutes of entering the game. (main menu works fine; My PC is trolling me)
It seems that installing 8.1 turned off directplay. So I tried turning it back on, but that did not help.
Then I tried installing an older version of DirectX, which also did not help.
Any other ideas?

what fixes are you using?CaptainK wrote:Any other ideas?
if you are using wine files you might try to re-download them and replace them they may have been updated.

Excellent idea! It was related to the wine files.thunderchero wrote:what fixes are you using?CaptainK wrote:Any other ideas?

After some time playing around with other verision of them I can't get it stable.
It seems that fix may no longer be an option with 8.1 unless someone smarter than me takes a crack at it.
It's playable again, I just have to deal with the mouse lag.

Hi
It is great to see that BOTF is still played after so many years :-)
Here's my complete installation guide that worked for me and hopefully helps people. It is based on what has been posted and adds a few things.
Installation on Windows 8.1 x64 from scratch
1) Download and run the installer BOTF_1.0.2_English_German_e.exe from https://www.armadafleetcommand.com/get- ... le_id=1958 (MD5: 584e362fb828250082f57a96c485ae94)
Good places for the game files are:
C:\Program Files (x86)\botf (this is where programs should go)
C:\Users\zerzog\Documents\botf (This is an unusual location for an application but it will avoid a permission issue later on)
I chose Vanilla Install Recommended (SOFTWARE)
Installation options
At the first launch, a Windows pop-up will request DirectPlay to be installed. Install it even if you do not intend to play multiplayer. If you don't you will get an error:
If you have installed BOTF in your home folder you can skip this otherwise you will notice that you cannot save games due to missing write/modify permissions.
This is fixed in command prompt:
Navigate to the BOTF folder and use Icacls. Copy and paste this line
Icacls game*.sav /grant users:(M)
sample output
Solution

ddraw.dll MD5: 54bb31d0eed33a487de145f118a75df3
libwine.dll MD5: 2b083c0af9c5ca9f7681bdeeb7eca8c4

Copy the three files into BOTF root folder. The game runs now smoothly.
5) Data Execution Prevention(DEP)
If DEP is enforced the trek.exe will crash:
6) Crash upon load game
I have noticed that the game sometimes crashes when I try to load a savegame.
7) It is not necessary to alter the trek.exe settings regarding compatibility modes or run as
Administrator. None of these are needed. ICCVID.DLL comes with the installer and videos play fine. This had to be added manually with previous versions of the installer.

this will work fine for single player games, but will not allow multiplayer games due to the space between "program" and "files"zero gravity wrote:Good places for the game files are:

I haven't tried multiplayer. The default c:\botf is best then.
