Hi folks,

i just read through this topic completely and since I'm running Win 8.1 now I tried out the fixes in this thread. (One after another, with mod reinstalling every time, UDM III. They all work like a charm for me but while using DxWnd the game occasionally crashes when the window is minimized to the taskbar. "Trek.exe has stopped working". Now that's kinda minor issue and as I said it only happens occasionally but I'm curious if I'm the only one with this problem. I also noticed that the game will freeze when doing something else than playing for a few minutes.

System:
Win 8.1 64bit
Phenom II x6 1090T @ 3,2 Ghz
Radeon HD 7970

I reinstalled UDM and tried DxWnd again and now it's starting to bug me. when minimizing the window and going back to the game the mouse cursor does'nt respond anymore. I hear sound, no hookup, no error message no crash, but the game gets unplayable as there is no way to control the game anymore. The mouse cursor freezes. Only solution is closing and restarting. Am I the only one with this issues? As I said no big deal as there is mpr++ and the wine files, just curious.

I read through this topic: viewtopic.php?f=3&p=42340#p42340 and followed all the instructions but for me, the problem persists.

It seems to be related to what other programs are running because when minimizing and maximazing and clicking a few times at random monitor spots it becomes controllable again.

Might stick with mpr++ for UDM anyway :-D

DxWnd is constantly being updated. but one thing you can try is modify the settings,

in Input tab I have been enabling "Release mouse outside window" this might help.

but crash when minimized has been a common complaint on DxWnd forum.

also I have noticed a system slowdown when using DxWnd and internet explorer at the same time.

Thanks for the advice TC, tried the setting you mentioned but the issue still persists. I guess i'll stick with it and wait for further updates of DxWnd. Meanwhile I'll use mpr++ for UDM and other supported mods as I love the shiny ship models. Most important is that the mouse lag issue is gone and therefore BotF is playable with Win 8 / 8.1 OS. And as DxWnd also works as long as it's not minimized everything's fine.

Tbh BotF not running properly was the only reason i resisted upgrading to 8.1.. How much of a geek can one single individual be? But as I had major USB problems with my previous Win 7 Installation (No USB device drivers found anymore, therefore I couldn't use my new headset) that ran for nearly 2 years and had a starting time of approximately five to seven minutes which REALLY was annoying as hell I upgraded. I gotta say I don't regret it. I am truly amazed how you guys manage to keep BotF up and running for us on nearly every OS.

Have a nice evening everyone (later on)!

try this setting, it helped me after minimizing window

Main tab, enable "Do not notify on task switch"
note; I am on v2_03_01_build, but doubt that will matter.

 I had previous DxWnd Version installed. After using newest version with the setting you proposed the crashes vanished.

Many thanks as always TC.

Hey,

I'd like to try out mpr++ too.

Can please someone send me a link?

I wanted to report an odd issue with using the DLL files to run the game, in case anyone else runs into it. It doesn't seem to happen through DxWnd.

Basically, moving the mouse from the Orders button to the Redeploy button crashed the game sometimes, but only when playing as the Klingons. I can't guess why this happens. It occured between two different mods, just to confirm, one of which was created before I had to switch to Windows 8 and didn't have this problem.

Recently downloaded BOTF for use on Windows 8.1. I'm using the Dxwnd prog in order to play Galaxy and Vanilla. With Galaxy I've noticed that the game crashes even more than with the vanilla version. In this latest game I've noticed that when I proposition a major power to form an alliance the game crashes. The same happens when I attack the Unimatrix system with a Scimitar and twelve Warbirds. The Borg cube is dispatched off, and I take out a couple of diamond shaped command ships, but when they retreat the game crashes. If I hit 'auto' I will have casualties, which isn't desirable at the moment, as I'm trying to build up my fleet in order to deal with the Klingons and their 100+ fleet.

Second game I'm playing with Galaxy. It's an interesting mod, but I realized too late that the fleets could be enormous. Fortunately they keep leaving their troop transports unguarded, which has kept them from pulverizing my systems.

Galaxy mod has many reported errors like that.

Tethys talked about updating Galaxy mod some time ago, but not heard from him in awhile.

The 'processing time' of a turn also keeps getting longer. And the crashes have gotten to the point where I'm saving with each turn.

I've since abandoned the Romulan game, even though I had overtaken the Borg collective and was prepping for a war against the Klingons. Playing as the Borg has been much more amusing. I've kept the processing time to an all-time low by rapidly expanding and overtaking my adversaries using the most primitive methods available. E.g. swarms of low-upkeep heavy destroyers, overwhelming numbers of heavy assimilators and a couple of dreadnoughts. Each newly acquired system will be churning out assimilators within three turns. My income is overwhelming - buying dreadnoughts just for the fun of it.

The Borg are overpowered in small galaxies.

I wonder if there are better mods available. I don't see me playing this game for long.

It is great to see that BOTF is still played after so many years :-)

Here's my complete installation guide that worked for me and hopefully helps people. It is based on what has been posted and adds a few things.

Installation on Windows 8.1 x64 from scratch

1) Download and run the installer BOTF_1.0.2_English_German_e.exe from https://www.armadafleetcommand.com/get- ... le_id=1958 (MD5: 584e362fb828250082f57a96c485ae94)

Good places for the game files are:
C:\Program Files (x86)\botf (this is where programs should go)

C:\Users\zerzog\Documents\botf (This is an unusual location for an application but it will avoid a permission issue later on)

I chose Vanilla Install Recommended (SOFTWARE)

Installation options
Destination location:
C:\Users\zerzog\Documents\botf
Setup type:
Vanilla Install Recommended (SOFTWARE)
Selected components:
Vanilla Install (SOFTWARE)
Start Menu folder:
Microprose\Birth of the Federation
Additional tasks:
Additional icons:
Create a desktop icon
2) DirectPlay
At the first launch, a Windows pop-up will request DirectPlay to be installed. Install it even if you do not intend to play multiplayer. If you don't you will get an error:
trek.exe - Application Error
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022). Click OK to close the application.
3) Save game issue
If you have installed BOTF in your home folder you can skip this otherwise you will notice that you cannot save games due to missing write/modify permissions.

This is fixed in command prompt:
Navigate to the BOTF folder and use Icacls. Copy and paste this line

Icacls game*.sav /grant users:(M)

sample output
C:\Program Files (x86)\botf>Icacls game*.sav /grant users:(M)
processed file: game0.sav
processed file: game1.sav
processed file: game10.sav
processed file: game11.sav

Copy the three files into BOTF root folder. The game runs now smoothly.

5) Data Execution Prevention(DEP)
If DEP is enforced the trek.exe will crash:

6) Crash upon load game

I have noticed that the game sometimes crashes when I try to load a savegame.

This occurs rarely and I haven't found a solution but it doesn't really affect gameplay.

7) It is not necessary to alter the trek.exe settings regarding compatibility modes or run as
Administrator
. None of these are needed. ICCVID.DLL comes with the installer and videos play fine. This had to be added manually with previous versions of the installer.
Hi everyone hope you are all well. Just to let you know I could not play the game due to 4) above (sluggish gameplay and mouse lag). I did what was suggested and copied the 3 files into the main folder on my laptop and this has solved the lag for me and I can play the game. I have not installed or tried any mods yet. I`ll post my system specs below for reference.
I also extracted DxWnd as mentioned in the thread by thunderchero viewtopic.php?t=3179&f=3#p43105 so I don't actually know if 1 or both things I did fixed it. But the combined combination has worked for me :)

Windows 8.1
Processor: AMD A4-1250 APU with Radeon(TM) HD Graphics 1.00 GHz
Installed Memory (RAM): 4.00 GB
System Type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor

Hey, wondering if anyone can help.

I've downloaded UM5 and I can get it running but the mouse is very sluggish - is there a way around this?

I've tried downloading:

ddraw.dll MD5: 54bb31d0eed33a487de145f118a75df3
libwine.dll MD5: 2b083c0af9c5ca9f7681bdeeb7eca8c4
wined3d.dll MD5: 500453184e14d73f9a00ac749d5a3c94

This fixes the problem when I run the 'normal' version of the game but it doesn't fix the sluggish mouse for UM5 - when added there is no longer any sound with UM5?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Eliteborg,

I never had much luck with wine files,
you could also try DxWnd on UM5
