Sorry, I should have said that I already installed the missing DX files before the crash. I didn't change any settings on startup, but makes sense that it would be a graphics issue. Is there a way to change the settings?

You may need to create a profile for BOTF within your video card setting/control panel. many new video drivers have so many settings that may effect game play, morphological filtering and crossfire have been most common problems, but others settings might cause 3d rendering crash like this also.

I turned everything off in the settings and (fingers crossed) haven't experienced a combat crash since. Thanks again for your help and suggestions!

for this you might need to setup a profile within your video settings for each install of botf (Nvidia contol panel or Catalyst Control Center), BOTF needs lower settings than default.

I've read through your guide on getting BOTF working on Windows 10 and I'm still getting startup crashes. Any suggestions?

Here's what I've tried:

1. fresh 1.02 install - crash
2. installed DirectX 9 redist - crash
3. windows 98 compat, disable dpi, run as admin - crash
4. DxWnd - windowed and not windowed - crash
5. installed patched .dll TS files to root game dir - slower startup followed by white screen and crash
6. changed the .ini to disable video (in case intro video was causing crash) - crash

I didn't want to install the dgvoodoo2 files because they were immediately flagged as a virus and I haven't tried MPR++. The game worked on this machine before I switched from Windows 7 to Windows 10. System specs:

AMD FX-8320E Eight-Core Processor
8GB Installed memory (RAM)
64-bit Operating system, x64 based processor
Direct X version 11.2
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti

alexgophermix wrote:4. DxWnd - windowed and not windowed - crash
when using Dxwnd use no compatibility setting on trek.exe, but Dxwnd must be ran as administrator.

don't blame you, I never liked dgvoodoo2 myself, but what antivirus flagged them? And can you submit them to antivirus company for review and report back findings?

and if all else fails request MPR++ links

I saw this suggestion, but wasn't sure how to proceed. Can you elaborate what I should be changing? I created a program rule specific to BOTF under "Manage 3D settings" and switched almost everything off that was possible and it still crashed.
when using Dxwnd use no compatibility setting on trek.exe, but Dxwnd must be ran as administrator.
I tried that but it didn't work either. I tried doing compatibility through the shortcut, and tried turning compat off and just running with the default settings provided by Dxwnd
what antivirus flagged them?
I have Sophos anti-virus 10.6

if it has on option turn it off, if it has slide bar set to lowest value

I just want to confirm you are using Multi installer? original CD install will not work.

just wondering when you attempt to start game what exactly happens? does it try to switch to fullscreen or does it fail even before that. Do you see any BOTF screens? do you get windows message or just crash? if just crash you mught have crash.log in botf folder that might be helpful.

also did it install correctly, look at install path of BOTF you should have 1 folder (english) and approx 57 files +/- 2 files

you might also try running installer as admin.

These are the only two related NVidia program I can find on my computer.

NVidia Control Panel: http://i.imgur.com/SPV0l0e.jpg
NVidia Geforce Experience: http://i.imgur.com/DSmKZWB.jpg

Neither seems to have an option to be disabled completely. Geforce Experience only has program specific settings for programs it can detect and are on the cloud. BOTF might be too old for that.

I am indeed using the multi installer. I lost the CD many years ago now.

With a fresh install it would full screen and then immediately give the "trek.exe has stopped working" error prompt. The only time this changed was when I installed the patched DLL files. After that it showed the black screen for a while but did nothing. If you click at this point the screen switches to white and it shows the same error message. I never hear sound and I think only with the fresh install can I see the BOTF cursor for a split second before the crash.

change to "use application settings"

that first screen scrolls down, please post second image of other setting so I can update first post.
hopefully that will fix problem though

also you should be able to attach image to your post instead of using i_imgur_com

when testing other fixes remove last fix, example Dxwnd might not like wine files present.

all files look to be present and installed correctly.

BTW even windows 7 is having problems with NVidia Control Panel setting now.

I tried removing the three TS fix dlls but Dxwnd still didn't work.

Perhaps there's been a recent driver update that's causing all of these problems?

other users have gotten it to work but not reported how or exactly what was needed, but it sounds like a new setting that is part of driver update that is not compatible with BOTF

I fixed it! For the first time ever Windows Compatibility assistant actually came to the rescue. I let it suggest an optimal configuration and this is what it changed it to:
f89cd70fa4402465629d11fd29bcd0e6.png
f89cd70fa4402465629d11fd29bcd0e6.png (20.38 KiB) Viewed 14051 times
(Windows XP S2 compat, NO admin, NO disable dpi scaling)

Using only these settings AND having the TS fixed dlls installed the game started. Disclaimer - it stays minimized for 20-30 seconds before it suddenly full screens and works so don't panic if this happens to you as well.

Even without any compatibility settings I couldn't get dxwnd to work. I even tried modifying its settings so that it runs in Fake XP as well but that didn't work either. Tried both windowed and non-windowed.

I hope that helps someone. If you have any further suggestions on what to try with dxwnd that would be awesome as playing in windowed mode would be preferable but it's definitely not a priority.

Thanks for all the help :)
