Several Issues with 1.0.1 installer

Post by Vladimir »

Windows Version: Windows 7 x64 Ult
Video card/chip info: Radeon RX 560
Are you useing DxWnd?: DxWnd Fullscreen
Was Birth of the Federation running on this system prior to this install No
List any crash logs or messages you might have seen
Windows states the exe has stopped working correctly, and will attempt to find a solution. If a log is created, it does not state where it can be found.

What have you already tried to solve the problem?
Uninstalled/reinstalled. Browse forums (details below).

Detailed description of your issue
OK, first hi again, it's been a while... Picked up ASCENDANCY Board Game recently, and it reminded me of BotF, so I decided to re-install again (had to reinstall because D: died a horrible death recently, and I lost ALL games installed over a long time - ten years?);
So I have actually encountered two issues, first a hardware update: Ivybridge i7-3770K (@4.2GHz); 16 GiB RAM; 500GB SSD; Radeon RX 560
First Issue; Vanilla: game played fantastic using Installer & Multi_1080_installer-BotF_HiResPatch, until somewhere around turn 75. Then my save simply vanished. Seriously, into thin air. I searched for it. It's gone...
Second Issue; BoP: Got to turn 29. At the end of this turn, seemingly no matter what I do the game crashes. Windows reports the problem above, but I do not know where the log is (if any). I have tried several times reloading - crashes every time.

Now, something I have found while looking at forums, Direct Play: as mentioned in the installer homepage, this must be turned on - but I do not have 'Legacy Components' folder even listed in the Window Features - google yielded little help on this... however the game plays well enough, until it doesn't...
Also, I 'installed' Supremacy (dl'ed the latest version, unzipped and ran the executable), which seems to load fine, allows game selection, but crashes right after game/map is generated, also with nothing note worthy to report. Not trying to put a ticket for that here, just advising in case that knowledge is somehow useful with my current issue(s). FYI: I have all pre-reqs listed for that game installed (or a higher version of what is listed)

Please let me know if you need anymore info, and glad to see you all are still kicking and keeping this great game alive!

Are you able to save game? or was issue with vanilla lost save a one time issue? since it sounds like BOP auto save is working I am confused.

1. it might help if you give trek.exe to "run as administrator" with save issue?

2. BOP crash attach saved game to next post.

3. Direct play is enabled/checked during any run of installer.

4. Supremacy has several Pre-requisites see this post

The issue with saves on vanilla happened first. I have since saved games, yes - and it appears the autosave feature is working, as I can 'continue' upon loading. I made sure to set the compatibility to 'run as administrator'. I was also saving games fine w/ BoP, I am confused as well...

1. it might help if you give trek.exe to "run as administrator" with save issue? - As stated above, I did this.

2. BOP crash attach saved game to next post. - Attached.

3. Direct play is enabled/checked during any run of installer.

4. Supremacy has several Pre-requisites see this post
viewtopic.php?f=300&t=3366#p44776 - Yes, I went by this post to verify I had all pre-reqs. I have what is listed for all items or higher versions installed.

Edit: Something else I thought of, I have been using this computer since I built it in end of 2012/beginning of 2013. I generally have no issues because I am the only person allowed to touch it :P - but earlier this year, January I believe, I updated/upgraded several components; one of which was RAM, which I didn't realize until it was too late that it wasn't 'quite' compatible w/ my mobo, so in the process of cloning my old hdd to the new ssd, it became corrupted and I had to reinstall the OS. With this of course came all the years worth of supporting installs (dx, redistributables, etc) also gone, I have been updating as necessary, but who knows all of what I have lost :(

I am playing 'normal' BoP - not large. also, from properties: "botf\tools\dxwnd_Fullscreen\dxwnd.exe /R:5". I did NO file editing, but I did at one point try and change it from running from full screen to windowed. I referenced a forum post when doing this, I believe I tried a few options... I think I tried changing the target to the windowed version vs full screen, using the dxwnd interface to launch, and maybe using the interface w/ right click modify. Been a long week at work, don't really remember. Maybe I should simply try uninstalling/reinstalling again?
As a side note, I don't see how this would affect SUPREMACY, nor do I know that they are related, just assuming.
Edit: for install options, also; all were default resolution etc, and then using Multi_1080_installer-BotF_HiResPatch. I had tried previously using largest res and the patch, that failed horribly.
Edit2: Ok, I just checked vanilla, and I believe that is the only one for which I tried to change from full screen to windowed, I do not believe I made any such alterations to BoP. The changes I made to vanilla seem to be working (still opens windowed), game still starts fine and I can load the test games I saved after the turn 75 game 'disappeared'.

1. BOP saved game, I had same issue so would need to look at it closer. but expect it is just an early corrupt save.

2. to change between DxWnd "windowed" and "Fullsreen" all you need to do is adjust the shortcut properties "target" and "start in"
change dxwnd_windowed -> dxwnd_Fullscreen on both lines.
note: DxWnd setting are set by your first install of "tools" if shortcuts are installed using windowed or fullscreen. You can also change your registry to set new preference. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microprose\Star Trek: Dx "window" yes for install window shortcut path and no for install fullscreen shortcut path.

3. You need to ask iceman about your issues with SUPREMACY start new topic with your issues here;

1. I wonder why it would have been corrupted though... I did not move or modify the file. Hopefully it won't happen again... nothing like getting so far into a game only to have it become unplayable :(

2. I did exactly what you stated in the shortcut properties, but also noticed it has a command line argument after the exe (I wasn't sure if windowed/full screen utilized the same command line arguments; ie: I notice right now vanilla running windowed has the argument /R:1 & BoP running full screen has the argument /R:5), so I changed it back, and then made the change by launching it through dxwnd, and then I think later I used right click/modify from within dxwnd to change the setting - but not sure there.

3. Will do, thanks for your time with all of it.

the argument at end "/R:1" is for the DxWnd.ini and what entry to use.

and yes entries (mods) are the same for both the installed dxwnd.ini but with different values for windowed and fullscreen.

Forgive my ignorance, but wouldn't that cause a possible issue if you simply change the path (windowed or full screen) and not the argument to match? Maybe when I did do this without changing the argument I caused a problem - at least with vanilla (Since that is where I am sure I made this edit, don't think I did with BoP)?

possible conflict, yes. But this is why I designed DxWnd to start automatically in background when shortcuts are used.

but it would take a major modification by the user. user would need to modify DxWnd list in such a way as to remove entry or move entry on pre-installed list (dxwnd.ini)

also it is simple to uninstall then reinstall "tools" to reset defaults or change install value to set (mods already installed would not change)

OK. I require more bourbon for this >_<
So I made that thread in SUPREMACY, and dealt further with that this afternoon until I started to get annoyed (and had other plans to tend too). Plans completed,and even changed the blower resistor that went in the F150. Sat back down, and remembered I had a save from turn 25 (remember it died/save is on 29), let's give that a go - 4 turns to 'wash out' what non-sense was going on.
Played it again, surely differently then originally as well, got to turn 29, and SMASH. Seriously. 'Oh why me?'...
So anyway... Do the powers that 'be' have something against STAR TREK?
So anyway, if it's corrupt, it seems the whole thing is, even previous save(s?). Going to try re-installing, because...

interesting, after you stated you were able to repeat issue I tested new game, and I had same issue.

But have no idea why 1080 patch is causing conflict but it is.

So until a solution can be found I suggest you use 1366 version in my tests it had no issues.

sorry

No, please - don't be sorry.
Hi, my name is Vlad. I am that guy that ALWAYS finds the weird 'shit'... Seriously, I am GLAD you know what the problem is, because that's something important.
Anyway, have you had any issue playing Romulans around turn 75-80 on Vanilla w/ the 1080 patch? Because that's when the other game's save games -vanished-. I could not save one day, after not having previous save issues after setting compatibility to run as admin, so I tried exiting/reloading the game, only to find all saves gone.
Right now I am around turn 30 in Error Correction Mod playing Feds w/ 1080 patch. Let you know how that pans out... Although now that I think about it, I played a few turns this morning, Rom's attacked me 1 escort 1 support, I had 2 escorts 1 support; and I kept nailing his ship good, but it never hardly got hurt, until he took out one of my escorts, and had the other on life support so I shut it down/exited game and started work... Issue or terrible luck lol (I had maybe 1/4 of his shields down on 1 escort by end, kept getting female voice 'What, no damage?' or something like that).

I found the issue with 1080 patch conflicting with BOP

at 0x00068bb9 change 02 -> 84

Gowron uses special code for map generation to find long edge?, but the res patcher is not aware of these changes.
