What have you already tried to solve the problem?
Tried to enable "Directplay" but don't even have a "legacy components" listed in "Turn windows Features on or off"
Compatibility mode dose not seem to help.
Tried new install.
Tried disabling antivirus.
Tried installing Direct X 9.0c (says newer or equivalent already installed)

Detailed description of your issue
So this was working fine on this computer and I would play BOTF every now and than. I probably went a year without playing it and it stopped working.
The game starts up fine. The main menu can be a bit buggy. Would start black and flicker until I selected a sub menu. It would do that before and never effected game play. I only mention it here to be thorough.

Any way I would select a race, the cinema would play, than the computer crashes. A few times I would get to the star map but it would always crash when I hit the Turn button.

sorry to hear you are having issues,

here is a couple things I suggest

1. install DirectX 9 redist this is different from directx 9c and does not change your current version of directx. It will only add any files that is not on your system.

2. use DxWnd, with the age of BOTF most video cards no longer support some of the older functions used by BOTF.

3. if you are not already using "all in one" installer, you should download and install it (this is full version no cd required)

4. You may need to set up custom game settings in your radeon setting (turn most features off) but this is trial and error.

good luck and let us know how it goes.
