how to modify ship textures?

hello all, i am in need of darkening a ship texture (*.gif). I am unsure what program to load the gif file inwhat program functions to use and then what to save the file as. Then obviously, how to replace a current pallette with a new one. If somebody has the time to detail the process i would appreciate it.
