Changing Map Size leads to unresponsibe / laggy game

Post by mytranquillity85 »

Hi all,

I hope this is the right place to address this, apologies if not :)

I recently found the botf CD and started playing again - discovered that the game still is alive after many years!
First of all thanks to anyone involved for the amazing work.

I am currently playing the UM5 from the BOTF all in one installer.
As I like smaller maps I tried to reduce the map size according to these instructions:

https://www.armadafleetcommand.com/botf ... ial-for-ue

However, as soon as I do this, the game becomes intermittently unresponsive, the mouse jumps / freezes for a second.
Its basically unplayable.

I've tried this two times, but each time I need to reinstall the game (if I change the settings back to the original the problem persists)

Any idea what I do wrong / could cause this?

Thanks
Andy

I know, but the game would start anyway, no matter if I edit the map size or not?
If I play the without changing it, it runs perfect :)

UM5 does not use any special code that I am aware of, but if you have edited it twice with same results it maybe does have some unknown code changes that will not allow galaxy editing.

the only other thing would be you may need to run respatcher
viewtopic.php?p=30780#p30780

but this normally needed when galaxy does not fill area, not issue you are having.

I had another look with this in mind, and I found the problem. *facepalm*

The botf shortcut that is created by the installer links to ...\botf\tools\dxwnd_Fullscreen\dxwnd.exe /R:9
When I was testing this, I was always running the trek.exe directly which then causes the problem. Was not aware that it works like this.

Thanks a lot, now its working!

Edit:
Guess I have the problem you mentioned above "but this normally needed when galaxy does not fill area, not issue you are having."

Is there a guide how to patch it again? The link provides the patch, but no instructions - I already fail to find the WDF files?

Use UE to extract files from stbof.res "Edit/other/files" select all files and "extract" to a new folder is the easiest way

delete folder after you use respatch

Played a bit with the other parameters, the sector size (pixels) fixed it.
I increased that to 35, and now the galaxy is as big as the frame.
Maybe the table was made for 800x600, not 1024x768?

Thanks for your help!

correct UE only auto sets values for 800 x 600 all other require using res patch after changes.

respatch also sets many values UE will not such as how many rows redeploy will have and other screens, that is why it has to read all wdf files.
