warships/starships
Greetings!
When you play an empire in botf a group of cruisers and destroyers are "warships" and when you play the federation they are called "starships". In the german version of botf the translation is incorrect ("Sternenschiffe"), because in germany starships are only called spaceships ("Raumschiffe"), including all ST series and movies. I would like to edit that, but I didn't found the option in UE. Can somebody help me?

Ohh, I got so accustomed to the word "Sternenschiffe" I'd really miss that one. Afterall we also say "Sternenkreuzer" don't we?
But well, why not name it "Raumpatroullie" then. A Raumpatroullie Orion mod, that would be awesome!

Maybe so, but exclusively used by fellas looking like the two guys in your picture....
I'm pretty sure Kurn is none of them.
I don't know how many bugs is too many but that point is reached somewhere before however many in BotF is.

Re: warships/starships
Well, the point is that by today we have no star travelling space ships. If in some distant future there actually ever exist such star travelling ships, I guess the german language will adapt to differentiate it from the many primitive space vessels there are by then. Therefore it is a phantastic example for artistic freedom of the authors of the game. And it hurts my heart when you dismiss it like that! *fun*
Actually, while I felt awkward on it for so many years myself, at some point I simply stopped thinking about it, but accepted it as just another unique special of the game. Now I would indeed feel awkward to call them 'Raumschiffe' again.

Thanks for the info!
I prefer "Raumschiff", because it's used in the german translated ST series and movies. The german translator of botf made a mistake and I finally corrected it only 2 decades later.Flocke wrote: ↑Wed Feb 16, 2022 2:35 pm edit: a perfect german word!

A ship in space is a spaceship. A ship travelling between the stars is a starship. Maybe a ship moving from a galaxy to another is a galaxyship.

Re: warships/starships
To be fair, all stars are within space, also galaxies are within space, so, I'd vote for spaceship. But that's just me.
My preference is starships (the starship Enterprise, etc), but as I am American, these translations probably do not apply to me

Re: warships/starships
In german, putting stars = german 'Sterne' in front, rather makes it a property of the ship itself.
Lets try some analogies:
A gas turbine (german 'Gasturbine') is powered by gas, so a star turbine would be powered by stars.
An aircraft carrier (german 'Flugzeugträger') is holding airplanes. Therefore a star carrier would, well, possibly carry many stars.
Samewise a sailing ship - we call it sail ship (german 'Segelschiff') - is equipped with sails.
A container ship (german 'Containerschiff') holds containers.
An house boat (german 'Hausboot') carries a house.
On the other hand, a city car (german 'Stadtauto') is used in a city and makes the car a part of the city.
A space ship (german 'Raumschiff') makes the ship part of the space.
And a bottle ship (german 'Flaschenschiff') is wrapped in a bottle.
A star ship likewise would either carry stars or be some inner part of a star.
That it is in plural form doesn't make things better. It however is a generalized form that either needs to carry or consist of multiple stars, or can be applied to any of them.
If I wanted to translate it back but keep the meaning, I'd possibly say 'star equipped ship', or 'ship of stars' if not 'ship part of stars'!
