Best difficulty for multiplayer

Hey everyone! What generally works best in terms of difficulty? I know it effects morale and how the AI controlled races (minors included) interact with you, and how much credits they recieve. I think it also plays a role in the frequency and severity of random events, though this isn't relevant if you have them turned off of course.

I believe normal and hard might make it easier to ally with a AI Majors/AI Minors, perhaps too easy. Is 'impossible' a better choice?
