Rotating mod tournament discussion

Post by thunderchero »

Looks like there may be a few questions about formats for upcoming tournaments.

first nothing is set I am tring to get more interest in tournaments while tring to keep them quick and simple. I hope this way less player will be "no shows" and everyone will have fun.

Each mod will be given it's own rank for champion.
ImageImageImage
ImageImageImage

The winner for each tournament will retain his title til next tournament of same mod or if mod is skipped champion would lose rank at that point. Or 6 months

All tournaments will have basicly same rules;

first 16 people to sign up then tournament starts
normal galaxy size exe
borg and randoms off
top player of bracket has first race choice.
any player can request 5 min timer. more info here
rounds 1 and 2:
Tech 5 med irregular many minors hard
Semifinals:
Tech 5 med irregular some minors hard
Finals:
Tech 5 med irregular few minors impossible

Note; each player needs to check on turn 0 that all setting are correct before continuing.

time limit for rounds:
all rounds should be completed in 1 week. (Except finals)
If extention is needed.
match should already be started and a date already set to continue play.
PM me if your match needs extention.

signup will start during semi final of current running tournament, and tournament will begin as soon as signup is complete.

A notice (via PM) will be sent to defending champion of the mod for signup (not other mods)

Also if anyone wants PM or e-mail notice when signup starts for any tournament PM me and I will start a list. Please state if you want PM or e-mail.

Players requesting signup notice PM or e-mail

Note; If list gets much longer I will setup a mailing group and send tournament newsletter via e-mail.

RSE_Chris - PM and e-mail

This is a good idea, but what happens if you champion more than 1?

player would get choice of rank of mods he has won and still be notified for any upcoming signup he has won.

Sounds good.

The only problem I would have is the 5 min timer. With the mods we start with 5 or 6 systems and as the game progresses and you either conquer, member or colonize a player can easily have 10 - 15 systems or more.

5 min wouldn't be enough time to do everything on all systems and move all your ships. I think the timer would penalize the player with the most systems.

This is, afterall, a strategy game and I find that thinking about my moves is more than half the fun.

The 5 min time rule has been in effect for last 3 tournaments.

I do not think this will ever be an issue, I know of no one that has requested it so far.
this is mainly incase a player is taking 20-30 min per turn to slow down game. I hope no game ever comes to this. I think all players understand they should complete turns quickly and will warn other player if a turn will be longer than normal.

this rule could also be adaptive, turns 1-50 5 min, 51-100 8 min ect... depending what point the game is at.

I will also add, if a player feels a timer has been requested to put any player at a disadvantage. report it to me and I will look at saved game to see if timer is really needed. or if time needs to be extended

I think we have adapted flocke's tournament mod as our vanilla for multiplayer games. :D thanks flockes for idea.

changes to mod (next version)
trade routes are limited to ferengi (and this will be looked at in next version).
it has all the 1.0.3 bug fixes
extra starting systems will be also balanced in next version. (no restarts)

TC, thanks that you thought about this issue and to the fast and clever solution you came up with. It looks great. It keeps the tournament quick, simple and interesting. And, I like the badges. :)

sign me up for the notifying list for new tournaments (pm is adequate)

one last thing. its about "the choice of rank of mods" which were won.
it is a little bit confusing for me...

to keep this whole thing as simple as possible:

The winner can choose the next mod which he wants to be played in the following tournament?
In this case a rule would be nice that choosing the same mod twice consecutevily won't be allowed. So the rotation can continue.

edit: about the 5 minute timer. in small and mid size maps 5 min is adequate in my opinion but I agree mickars opinion that thinking about the possibilities characterizes BotF and it is most of its fun. So I tend to agree to the 8 minute timer in later turns. I would prefer to keep this as an optional option.

Sure, but keep aware, I might start demanding further changes at will, with calling it after me.
For example, the raiding percentages should be lessened a little, dx_chaos and severenth know why. ;)

Why not just creating a 1.0.4 version and a 1.0.4 tournament one!

BTW, I like the circle thing and 5min timer is absolutely enough, yeah!
Shall the one with above 20 systems get bleeding hands, at least noone can complain about having to wait on me 15 minutes anymore. =)

oh, and take me on the list :P

plan is starting with latest version of 1.0.3 that already has raiding percentage fix.

and you input is always welcome

I wish it could be set up so 5 min timer would start when other player has completed his turn.

Good ideas there, please put me on the list too and send me pm's to inform about tournys. Good idea with the different badges (though I doubt I'll ever own one of 'em).

Thx in advance.

sorry KrazeeXXL, I missed this part of your post earlier.
I think a set rotation would be best. and go though option in first post and start over.

Edit; the posts about raid and scrapping has been moved to here

viewtopic.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=866

I also want retract a statement that was made on that post about Rotating mod tournaments

as the name says "MOD" so vanilla 1.0.2 will not be part of this rotation.

anyone is welcome to start any tournament at any time.
I will even offer any help the forum can give them.
