multi player help

hello everyone, i have been trying to play against my brother (we need to once and all sort out who is better) does anyone know how to set up with a lan or ethernet cable in a network, we are in the same room so no need to use internet.

sorry we are particularly un-skilled with these computer things... an idiots guide would be great thanks
