I just was a massive fan of the classic BOTF! And I have just stumbled on this! This game is amazing!
Also is there a way to mod this? Would love to slow research down a little more and add my own ships in?

Thanks for your kind words! Glad you found the game and are enjoying it. It's still a work in progress, so any feedback is welcome.
The game is highly moddable. You basically just need Notepad or Notepad++ (recommended, at least for the xml files).
Re research speed, did you try setting Research Rate to Slow in the Options panel, when starting a game? If you did, and want it to be even slower, edit the following file
\Resources\Tables\GameOptionTables.txt
in the ResearchRate table, change Slow (0.5) to whatever you want. That value is a multiplier applied to your research every turn.
There's a bunch of stuff you can mod in the Tables folder.
As for adding your own ships, you'll need to add them in the following files, in the Resources\Data folder:
TechTrees.xml - add them to your researchable items
TechObjectDatabase.xml - set their stats
TextDatabase.xml - add a description and weapons names
HomeSystems.xml - add them to your starting items in a new game if you wish
You'll also need to add a 2D image, in \Resources\Images\TechObjects\Ships
And if you have a 3D model of the ship to be viewed in the shipbuilding menu, add it to \Resources\Models
Notice the naming of the techobjects, the KEYs must match in the data files, and the 2D image name and the model folder name also must match.

I am trying to only use Cannon and Game cannon ships.

Sounds great. We do need to take a hard look at the ship lists, and see if any changes are needed. Some of the 3D models we have did not match the actual ships in the database, because of a shiplist update some time after the models were made...
Danijel has plans to completely redo the Dominion shiplist.
And we need to add a 2nd Construction ship to all the empires (except the Feds which already have it; the Dominion one, I repurposed a minor civ ship some time ago, but no model was converted, so both ships have the same model...).
If you want to help with this (or with anything really), just let us know! We welcome all the help we can get to move this project forward as fast as possible.
Curiously enough, I had this plan to (re)name the civ starting levels to the Eras.
Danijel has plans to completely redo the Dominion shiplist.
And we need to add a 2nd Construction ship to all the empires (except the Feds which already have it; the Dominion one, I repurposed a minor civ ship some time ago, but no model was converted, so both ships have the same model...).
If you want to help with this (or with anything really), just let us know! We welcome all the help we can get to move this project forward as fast as possible.

ou i have "in plan" to redo all lists (and nothing against anyone else doing it ^^ ) as of when is another story, dominion is 1st on my list since they are in biggest mess

I think uploading files to BitBucket requiers Write access, which only Mike (Strobel) can give.

I advise that you keep working on one civ at the time, getting em all mayor civs ships will get you to amount of over 150 models to work with in no time.
3d model format needs to be .x cus of xna
images/textures can be in any "familiar" format,..jpg,gif,png,bmp..

Fed first as they are the easist and can get to grips with the game.
Prob do romulans next.
Then Klingons.
Might add a fighter class aswell for late game. We see in DS9 fighters.
Not adding the crossfields class as discovery has stated only 2 where made and they are expiremental plus game unbalancing.
The other idea is 3 classes of starbase.

Wow, that's 45 ships not counting non-combat ships, and stations. That's a lot of ships, and a lot of models... balance (and purpose) will be a nightmare.
You'll probably not be able to get as many ships for the other major civs.
I'll be interesting to see how this will turn out!
