Options during Tactical Combat

Post by Snapper9 »

In the original version of the game, Tactical Combat has several options for the ships/groups. These options are called:

Charge
Harry
Strafe
Evade
Ram
Retreat
Hail
Select

Which maneuvers are hidden behind the mentioned options? What especially are purposes of "Charge", "Harry" and "Strafe"?

the ship commands refer to how they will move in combat toward selected target.
when each command is selected it will display an image on left of basic movement.
some commands are for single ship while other are for groups of ships.

How they actually move depends of what command the target uses.

each command uses different probabilities to calculate effectiveness/damage, but this all depends on counter commands also.

example; charge vs charge would do max damage to all ships, while charge vs evade would prolong battle.

but to be honest any battle human vs AI are very simple and mostly favors human.
if AI has advantage they will attack
if AI is at disadvantage they always retreat

This is why combat is best experienced in Multi player human vs human

I understand the example. But how do the other combinations actually work?

as far as I know no one has documented how each command works against other commands.

this would be a very difficult test to do. and I doubt any one would take the time to do it.

sorry

I would do it, if I knew how.

mostly, not always. I had some battles with AI ships, although they were outnumbered.

correct, I should have said "most of the time" but they will fight to the end when they have "something to protect at all cost".

What would "something" like that be? A particularly important star system, I'm guessing?

I will always remember my favorite game ever,

it was early in a game and I was playing as Klingons. The Federation was in the center of the map and they had treaties with all other races but me. I went for the kill shot and attacked Sol first with everything I had (5 full fleets of heavy cruiser + 5 troop transports) I took sol on the first assault. For the next 25 turns every race converged on sol to take revenge. I was able to hold my ground against every battle and only lost 4 heavy cruisers while sending 4 new fleets to wipe out the other Federation colonies.

It was many epic battles with even more smaller battles when they had no chance to survive. And I don't remember any ships retreating. But once Federation was gone it went back to normal.

but to your question that is just one example (revenge), but there are many more reasons
