Linux install success!

Post by ralyon »

I've been trying to get Supremacy to work on Linux for the last couple months and I am happy to report that I finally got it working today and I am currently playing! YAY! I wanted to come here and share how I was able to get it working so others might finally be able to enjoy this great game without having to switch to Windows to run it.

I am currently running Arch, Garuda and I have Steam running with all of my other games working great. I had added Proton Experimental to work out some issues with Space Engineers, which is the version I was able to get Supremacy running under. This can be installed in Steam if you search the Tools for Proton. You will also need protontricks to add the necessary libraries. Here are the steps I followed to get it to work:

1. Download the SupremacyTest, patch and XNA redistributable from the stsupremacy.com site.
2. Extract the SupremacyTest and patch into a folder same as you would on Windows.
3. Setup a shortcut in Steam for Supremacy under Games, Add a non steam game (necessary for protontricks).
4. Run protontricks and select the Supremacy shortcut you just setup.
5. Go to the Install a Windows DLL or component
6. I installed the dotnet452 and the dotnet20sp2 at this point. I also installed the dotnet48 later and you might be good with doing that one instead of the dotnet452 at this point, but I haven't tested this yet.
7. After you are done installing dotnet, go back to the previous menu and select "Run an arbitrary executable". Select the XNA file you downloaded in step 1 and complete that install.
8. Go back to the DLL or component selection and now install the dotnet48.
9. After all that, exit protontricks and go back to Steam. Bring up the Properties for the Supremacy shortcut you created and add the following to the Launch options: PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
10. Close out the properties and you should be able to hit Play now. GL and happy gaming!

I'll update this as I find out more.

Edit 3-20-26: Forgot to include the .net 4.8 install in the instructions the first time.

So I've been playing about a week now and have been through about 1,000 turns total and I have only found 2 issues.

1. The game will randomly lock on the "Processing turn: Waiting for other players" when you end turn. I have only been playing single player so it's not an MP issue. Sometimes it happens after a few minutes, sometimes I can play for more than an hour without this issue. I can hit Esc to clear the message and go though the map and different screens and even get to the main menu, but I can't make any changes or reload the save, only exit. When I restart I can load the auto save and never had it lock on the same turn twice.

2. The pop up videos do not play. I get a player window, but it just plays a test screen which is what proton normally does when it doesn't have the codec to play the video. If anyone can give me some details on these videos I'll see if I can find what needs to be installed to get them to play and add that to the instructions above. I looked though the game folder, but couldn't find the video files themselves.

Let me know any additional information I can provide. I've looked at the errors log file but didn't see anything relevant when I did.

It probably is something related to Linux and/or Proton (or Steam)?
Doesn't happen to me, and there haven't been any such reports in this forum. :???:
If it cannot be reproduced, it's hard to track down the problem.

Which pop up videos are you refering to?
There are no videos (not yet anyway) in Supremacy.
What do you mean by player window?

BTW, are you playing the dev version or the Combat Engine preview?

Just wanted to mention it in case it comes up somewhere else or someone had seen it.

Here is a screenshot of what I see. It is rare, but if something is supposed to be showing up, I wanted to work on getting it to show correctly.

Dev version

Edit:
I've attached the save file of the turn with the video popup.

Odd. :???:
Does it happen only when something specific happens in the game? Say, an event, like in the screenshot you posted?

Yes, no more than half a dozen events bring up that screen I would estimate. That was the first one on this play through. Would it be helpful to keep track of which events trigger that screen?

List of events that pop up the video window. I'll keep this post updated as I find them.

If it happens for all scripted events, could it be related to trying to play the WMA audio files?

I checked out the Scripted Events folder and that does look like all the events I have seen that popup with. I've been looking into adding the Windows Media player codecs into proton and it is problematic especially on 64bit systems. There is another version called proton-GE (Glorious Eggroll) which includes the codecs and I had tried initially, but that breaks the game in other ways like the text on buttons being completely garbled and not being able to create the necessary folders when starting a game so it's not playable. Would it be possible to convert the wma audio files to wav like the rest of the audio in a future update to remove this requirement?

Iceman, If that's an option for you, I might be able to help with changing the wma to wav files.
Great work Ralyon! I am yet to delve into the linux world, but getting closer to trying every day! Your work here just might tip me over to the linux side, with supremacy up and working..

If you don't mind, yes please!

edit:
I think I have some of the originals in .WAV. We ended up converting them all to .WMA because of ReligiousHoliday IIRC.

I think you can delete them (or just rename them), and they won't be played.
