GameRanger: new place to play Birth of the Federation online

Post by Scott_Kevill »

Hi all, just thought I'd let you know about a new multiplayer network I've created for playing Birth of the Federation online called GameRanger. It also currently supports:
- Star Trek: Armada II
- Star Trek: Armada II Demo
- Star Trek: New Worlds
- Star Fleet Command: Orion Pirates
- Star Fleet Command II: Empires at War
- Star Fleet Command II: Empires at War Demo
- Star Fleet Command III

Basically, GameRanger makes it quick and easy to play your friends online.

It has full lobby support for over 500 different games and demos (including the above games, of course), without the hassles and headaches that usually happen with network connections (eg. routers & firewalls).

I'm really excited to be releasing it, and hope it helps boost the Star Trek community by allowing people to play that were unable to until now due to problems with opening ports, etc.

You can download it at www.GameRanger.com

I welcome you to try it and see if it solves your networking problems.

@thunder guid not guil ;)

Well, the GameRanger announcement sounds too good to be true.
Hope it's doing what you're promising Scott_Kevill!

There's not much about it on the website. No screens, forum not working, no information about how it's working,...
I'll let others have the risk to test it.

Do any of you folks still use Hamachi? I have that and it seems stable.

SK, sounds great... what's the cost? anybody cares to try it out? i can't really try it out by myself.

got an account... seems friendly and thorough enough... even asks if i want to ban profanity from chat messages...

how does bronze version differ from other ones?

this looks safe enough with currently close to 250 users on line... looks sleek and easy...

just need someone else to try it out wiht me..

tried gameranger last night, kimino hosted our game-which was a first for him as he can not host in warzone. the game launched first time(no messing with ports or firewalls btw)it was going ok untill i locked up in combat,we reloaded and carried on but every few turns we got the syn error message so eventually we gave up and went back to warzone :)

maybe it was just "one of those nights" but its worth trying again.

Sorry about taking so long to get back. There's been a lot going on with the launch.

I'll have to find some time to look into that to see what's involved.

Yeah, the website had just been redesigned with an emphasis on simplicity, which is what GameRanger is all about. For what it's worth, GameRanger has been the standard Mac online gaming service since 1999. It's only new and unknown to PC gaming.

It's completely free to play. The Silver and Gold accounts offer additional features, but are not required by any means.

Out-of-Sync errors are usually unrelated to networking. They tend to be due to the simulations in the game itself.
