Getting into Modding

Post by severenth »

Basically, I now have a lot more free time, and I would like to begin hacking, cracking, improving and building my own mods for BOTF

However, I would like to know what programs people are using, for example, Hex Editors, Image Editors, the full whammy, so I can jump in and have some fun.

Please do list any and all programs, no matter how minor or unrelated intially, I'd just like a place to refer to so I can spend more time modding and less time with my beloved Google

Sry dude,

UltimateEditor from DCER is a must of course. Even for hexediting it's useful to extract compressed files.

Additionally I use
HxD as hexeditor,
good old Windows Editor as text editor,
GIMP as graphic program,
Blender3D as 3D program but dunno how to export to BotF yet - although there's a guide somewhere with another but expensive program.

For the rest you have to wait on others reporting or must search the forums.

'GIMP' ...who on earth thought that name up?

have to say, Ultimate Edtior is an absolute godsend for people like myself who have ideas on what they'd like to do, but can barely switch a PC on without getting into a fight with it

other necessary Programs are:

Winrar:
to open the .res files (as winzip corrupts them)

Ultimate unwrap 3D:
a simple program to align textures on 3d models, it is avaiable for free, use google

Multigen-Paradigm's Creator:
to make the .flt files
(as i am not sure if it is legal to post a DL link here i won't do it, PM me if you need it)

The Converter files:
this collection of small programs allows you to conver the .flt files into .Hob files
you can get them here: viewtopic.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=79

I would recommend the open source alternative 7-zip.

I would like to thank you ALL for your help in this matter

I did try a search, but I think with the regulars all back after site restore, everyone just knew what to do and use

If also, anyone knows any good toutorials, how to make/break ships, upgrades, that sorta thing, please ( if you have the time ) list a few

maybe we could compile this into a new part of the site ?

check out this page, the first four steps are still up to date, i am sure you wont have any problems to follow them.

http://www.trekmania.net/conference/botf_tutorial.htm

step 5, the binary separation is outdated, we found a more efficient way to do it, and the models look much better then, however it still works. i will post a How TO, about the binary separation as soon as i find the time. just make a small model for the first time and this way of doing the separation will do fine.

Now to the phasers: after step 5.8 in the tutorial linked above, you need to do this:
viewtopic.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=6

just scroll down to the post from: Sun Aug 03, 2008 1:46 am, it explains very easily how to add phasers.

after that continue with the tutorial and your ship will be fine.

resurrection just to ask this question: any changes to what software you use outside of UE, like do you still use hxd for hex editing?
