Galaxy Type... what the heck does it really do?

I probably should know this by now but I really am not sure what effect the galaxy type has on the map?

The map is always the same grid no matter what type of galaxy so what really is this setting doing? :???:

Is there really any advantage?

it affects the distribution of systems versus empty plots; i never tried it; alwaysed used iregular but i guess if you chose ring then you will have an empty center; if spiral systems will be clustered in some arms;

Well I suppose that makes sense.

Yes, the map type determines where stars are distributed.

Spiral maps will place most stars on the two main spirals, elliptical galaxies will see stars spread more evenly (although like spiral galaxies, the corners are still usually empty), and irregular galaxies are...well, quite interesting at times. ;)

Actually, ring maps have a cluster of stars in the middle with a ring of stars at the perimeter, and separated by a void in between.

Against the AI, I always go irregular and hope for some breathing room between my nearest neighbors.
