BOTF remakes

The slowdown in BOTF ruins an otherwise perfect game for me.
I tried playing the spiritual successor Birth of the Empires and while its very impressive I found the game a little dull and needlessly complicated. That might say more about me of course.
I also keep an eye on Supremacy and Iceman's updates on his magnum opus.
What's people's thinking on BOT Empires and any other remakes of the classic BOTF?
