Vanilla: Why are Strke Cruisers short range?

I just took a look at the vanilla game, and was struck by something.
The Romulan Strike Cruisers are short ranged. The description says they are for bombardment of enemy planets. Shouldn't they be long range so they can reach the enemy?
Was this a bug or by design?

I thought I asked this years ago, but I couldn't find it by searching so if it's been discussed before, just give me a link to the old posts.

All Strike Cruisers (and all Command ships) are Short range.
It's by design, not only in terms of [game] balance (the most powerful ships have shorter range to compensate, else you wouldn't really use any other ship types once you unlocked these), but also it makes some sense (they are more supply intensive ships, they need to be closer to a resupply point and are not capable of long-range, extended missions).
So, you need to create such resupply points (outposts) so that they can get to the enemy planets.
