Re: Star Trek: Infinite - BOTF successor? Possible
interesting.
personally spoken: i LOVE master of orion 2!
And i hated the reboot or "new interpretation" it got by this firm, which is now trieing their skills with another of my loved all-time games.
To me, its bad news.
I will buy it annyway ) (and i have to start getting to know stellaris).
at leats it is an opportunity for stark treks staying alive with an fresh "livesign". most games within this francise are "low budget" (hoping not to make myself enemies by this statmeant )

Even though I don't expect much from this game, it is nice that they are about to release a more serious 4X Star Trek game than any of those that came out in recent years. With the Stellaris engine development wise they made a real great move for making sure it'll be a decent game.
It however comes with a bad taste given that they rush out the game so fast and don't give more insights and talk. Still curious of what we'll get.
Would be cool if they also improved on game mechanics or at least integrated some new story telling.

Looks like we've got a new 'Game features' trailer and some news on preorder bonuses...

Their first dev diary is here too.. they even mention BOTF as inspiration and recreating that experience which is great. I'm loving all their TNG/DS9/VOY era artwork (presumably used in the game's many events and story trees).

And lastly IGN got a copy and have done a nice preview on it too...

The one thing that bothers me more than anything is the lack of a proper Star Trek UI. BOTF still wins at that.

Dev diary 2 and 3 have arrived.. The third one is on the very thing I've been impressive with the most so far.. that lovely nostalgic TNG art style of their's.. There's something about it that reminds me of STTNG Final Unity's art style in that it was quite realistic but retained a bit of a artistic painted look. They also appear to reveal the full faction lineup of ships and starbases. Not many ships sadly and similar to BOTF back in the day it appears to be pure 24th century TNG onwards with no TOS content (unless it appeared in TNG). Also a bit sad to see the minimalist GUI features almost no LCARS whatsoever, as the LCARS in BOTF really upped the immersion and uniqueness between the races.

I agree. Final Unity's art style was amazing. I think ST: Infinites seems to be the closest to BOTF we may get in a commercial game in our lifetime. I do kind of like the 4 races vs 5 too the more I think about it. (Sorry Ruthless...if you read this, the Ferengi always were a shoe-horned race in BOTF.

That "first contact-ish" picture of Ent-D bridge calls for "Garidian warbird decloaking directly ahead" kind of clause.
But, I think "the more, the merrier", I would include the Borg, the Dominion and possibly the Ferengi, that's if they were made entirely unique economical power as they should be.

I wonder if they would be mad if I used some of those "dev pics" as structures in GALM

Yea the general feedback in Discord so far appears to be that it has a few teething issues with the launcher and a few bugs, but is an enjoyable game nonetheless and quite a few people seem to be playing it. The launcher issues have now been patched though, and hopefully other bugs will be patched in due course.
I'm enjoying it personally and I think Infinite has a good future ahead.

Re: Star Trek: Infinite - BOTF successor? Possible
Games don't get me excited these days like they used to. After the disappointment of games like Star Trek: Legacy (bad development) and Star Trek: Online (bad development *AND* DLC), and whatever came out after that (I didn't re-follow until recently), I have a very low hope for any modern Star Trek game. Not just because of bad development, but also the potential and highly likely scenario of including the Nu Trek garbage into any modern Star Trek games.
I dare modern Star Trek game developers to prove me wrong.
I think the best we could ever hope for is revitalization of old games like BotF and Bridge Commander, or something which is easily and fully moddable like Space Engine (modern) or Galactic Civilizations (classic). BotF still has my heart.
Here is one steam review.. alot of not recommended. Warning: Spoilers

The game undeniably has some issues right now, but I'm still enjoying it nonetheless. I expect further patching will smooth out a lot of the rough edges.

They're probably already working on DLC 1 of 25 vs bug fixes.

Cool 'first day' gameplay trailer..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Adebhvd_u2Q
Release story trailer...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6T0DtcZu1jU
Interesting that story wise they appear to be basing it around the yesterdays enterprise alternate universe but presumably before the Feds start losing the war to the Klingons and you get to 'set a new path'..
Reminds me of a great Civ4 Star Trek mod scenario set in that timeline as well where you gotta try and turn the war around for the Feds. I show it around the 9:30 mark of this video..
https://youtu.be/635fMVgRkD4?list=PLZqn ... i9Z9XwL-A_
The whole release has been a bit rocky but I never play day 1 releases anymore and from what I'm seeing this one is no exception and it's definitely gonna be a long time before I get to it, so all good lol. Anyway it looks like they've put some more dev diaries out around the release period..
Dev 4 is stuff on story..
https://steamcommunity.com/games/162290 ... 5658444628
Dev diary 5 talks about bug fixing and hints as to whats being added next (Ferengi buildings & Dyson sphere)..
https://steamcommunity.com/games/162290 ... 1162309645
Dev diary 6 is now out too talking about how the day 1 release was a bit of a disaster lol.
